
#22 CSUN Opens Up With #8 Arizona State at Triton Invite

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (6-2) opens up a two-day stay at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational on Saturday. The Matadors will play twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday in the 16-team invitational. The Matadors kick off play against No. 8 Arizona State on Saturday at noon and will take on either No. 5 UC Irvine or Santa Clara as the winners and losers of each match will square off. CSUN's Sunday's opponents will be determined later in the weekend.
The Matadors have competed at the Triton Invitational in each season since 2006. The 16-team tournament this season features 13 ranked teams including seven Top 10 squads. Four teams are divided into four different brackets to make up the opening two matches of the tournament. At the highly competitive tournament, the Matadors have posted winning records twice in 2010 and 2014.
CSUN is riding a five-match winning streak after posting twice wins last Friday at California Baptist. The Matadors outlasted California Baptist 11-10 in sudden-death overtime and picked up a 12-6 win over Fresno Pacific to conclude the day. Sophomore Kylee Jansen posted hat tricks in each match to finish with a team-best six goals. Senior Katia Andon-Mateos scored five goals in the two matches including a three-goal effort against CBU. Andon-Mateos scored the Matadors' lone goal in the second overtime and hit the game-winner in sudden death overtime. In net, freshman Meghan Lopez racked up 15 saves to help beat the Lancers while freshman Piper McCulloch had nine saves against Fresno Pacific.
Jansen has scored in every match for the Matadors as she has a team-high 17 goals to start the year. Her 17 tallies rank ninth-best in the Big West. Senior Tori Wilson has also hit the back of the net in each match en route to tallying 12 goals. Also with 12 assists, Wilson is tied with fellow senior Jennalyn Barthels for sixth place in the Big West in points with 24. Three Matadors are ranked in the Big West's Top 10 assists list, led by Barthels with 16. Wilson is third in the league in assists while sophomore Alessia Marquez is tied for seventh place with 11.
Wilson tops the Big West in steals heading into the week with 17 followed closely by Barthels in second place with 12. In front of the cage, Lopez is second in the Big West in saves (53), seventh in save percentage (.646) and ninth in goals-against-average (6.72).
CSUN and Arizona State have met 22 times in water polo with the Sun Devils winning 18 of those meetings. CSUN has dropped the last 12 in the series and has not picked up a win since April 2005 (7-6 win). The teams last met in Feb. 2016 with Arizona State holding off CSUN in an 8-4 triumph.
Arizona State is 6-1 to start the year with its only blemish coming at the hands of Hawai'i (9-7) last Saturday. The Sun Devils went 4-1 at the Cross Conference Challenge in Tempe, Ariz. as they picked up wins over Azusa Pacific (12-6), Cal State East Bay (11-4), Sonoma State (18-5) and Princeton (9-5). Sophomore Borbala Kekesi leads the squad with 22 goals this season while junior Amira Van Buren has notched 14. In goal, freshman Itzahiana Baca has tallied 50 saves through seven matches.
