The Matadors are ranked No. 20 in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll. CSUN is off to its best 12-match start since the 2014 season when that Matador squad opened the year with the same record. The Matadors have not started a season with at least nine wins through 13 matches since the 2010 season (11-3 record).
CSUN is coming off a 2-2 showing at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational last weekend. The Matadors dropped the opener of the invite to No. 8 Arizona State, 9-3, but bounced back with a 10-6 win over Santa Clara. On day two, the Matadors again fell to a Top-10 ranked team as No. 9 UC Davis beat CSUN 9-7. However, the Matadors wrapped up the event in strong fashion with a 9-7 win over No. 21 San Diego State. Senior Katia Andon-Mateos led the way offensively with six goals in the four matches while freshman Meghan Lopez played in goal four times and racked up 22 total saves.
Despite missing the Matadors' last two matches at the Triton Invitational, sophomore Kylee Jansen leads the Matadors in goals with 19 through 10 matches. Andon-Mateos is a close second in goals with 18 while senior Tori Wilson had 17 goals. Senior Jennalyn Barthels has racked up a team-high 20 assists to go with 18 steals. Wilson has registered a team-leading 29 steals on the year.
In net, Lopez is posting a 7.11 goals-against average with 75 saves in over 234 minutes of action. Lopez is also saving 10.25 shots per game. Freshman goalkeeper Piper McCulloch also has 47 saves and an 8.00 GAA.
CSUN is 4-1 against Whittier in the all-time series. The Matadors picked up four-straight wins from 2010 to 2016 before the Poets edged CSUN 12-10 in 2017. In three neutral-site meetings, the Matadors are undefeated against Whittier.
Ranked fourth in this week's CWPA Division III national poll, the Poets are 2-2 on the season and have been off since Feb. 2. Whittier's two wins have come against Long Island University (14-13) and St. Francis (13-10). Whittier went 13-10 last season.
The Matadors are 10-1 all-time against Redlands. After dropping its first match to the Bulldogs in the 2003 season, CSUN has won 10 in a row in the series. The Matadors defeated the Bulldogs 16-8 last season behind three-goal performances from Wilson and Madasonne Butler.
Redlands is ranked sixth in this week's CWPA Division III poll. Redlands has played in only one match this season, which was an 11-8 win over Ottawa (Ariz.) on Feb. 9. In their win, the Bulldogs were led by Hunter Olivier who scored three goals. Redlands finished with a 14-16 record in 2019.
