CSUN Takes the Opener from Gonzaga in Extras
3/6/2020 6:52:00 PM | Baseball
SPOKANE, Wash.---Freshman Mason Le hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th that proved to be the difference in CSUN Baseball's (9-3) 4-3 win over Gonzaga in the opener of a four-game series on Friday at Patterson Baseball Complex. Senior Jayson Newman delivered two hits and two RBI as well as a solo home run while senior Robert Bullard racked up two hits including a triple in the 10th inning. On the pitching side, sophomore right-handed pitcher Blake Sodersten pitched eight-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Sodersten retired three of the first four batters to start the game but GU struck for two runs in the second on one swing of the bat. After a leadoff single from Stephen Lund, Jack Machtolf stroked a two-run home run.
After the second inning, Sodersten found his rhythm on the mound and silenced the Gonzaga offense. Sodersten picked up a timely 3-6-1 double play to end the third inning then he sat down the next eight batters. Tyler Rando broke up the streak with a two-out single in the sixth but Sodersten erased the next batter to end the frame. Sodersten faced the minimum over the seventh and eighth innings to complete a string where he retired 20 of 22 batters.
CSUN trimmed the Gonzaga lead in half in the top of the third, capitalizing on a Gonzaga miscue. Andrew Lucas kept the inning alive with a two-out walk before Kai Moody roped a double to left field. Lucas made it to third and would score on a fielding error from Machtolf.
The Matadors evened the game an inning later behind back-to-back extra-base hits. Denzel Clarke kicked off the inning with a line-drive double to left field. Newman followed with an opposite-field double in the gap in right center, which plated the speedy Clarke.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the sixth when Newman struck again. The right-handed slugger belted a one-out home run over the right-field wall to give the Matadors a 3-2 edge.
Sodersten protected the lead until the top of the ninth when Gonzaga began the frame with a single from Brett Harris. CSUN closer Blake Schriever entered out of the bullpen and proceeded to retire the next two batters before Lund kept the inning alive with an infield hit. Machtolf would deliver again with an RBI single to bring in the tying run. Schriever eventually loaded the bases but forced Grayson Sterling to fly out to end the inning.
In the 10th, Bullard started the inning with a triple to deep center field but two of the next three batters went down on strikes. An out away from leaving the go-ahead run at third, Le delivered for the Matadors as the freshman hit an opposite-field single to give CSUN a 4-3 edge.
Schriever returned to the mound in the home half of the 10th and pitched around a CSUN error to retire the side and secure the win.
GAME NOTES
With two hits and two RBI, Newman now has a team-leading five multiple-hit games and four multiple-RBI games this season. Moody's double extended his on-base streak to 12-straight games while Clarke pushed his on-base streak to nine in a row.
Both Le and Lucas returned to the Matador lineup after missing last weekend's trip to UCF. Le went 1-for-4 with a walk while Lucas scored a run and walked twice.
Gonzaga starter Mac Lardner went six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today was a hard-fought victory for our guys. Blake Sodersten really rebounded from an off week last week against UCF and was at times dominant in a very good start for us. He retired 20 of 22 guys at one point and his low pitch count allowed him to pitch into the ninth. Jayson Newman had a good day offensively and Mason Le got the game-winning hit in the 10th after Robbie Bullard led off with a triple. It was a good win for us in game one up here in Spokane knowing that Gonzaga is a tough place for visiting teams to win. We need to continue our resiliency as a team as the weekend continues."
UP NEXT
CSUN continues its weekend series in Gonzaga with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one set for 1 p.m. with game two tentatively slated to start after 4 p.m.
