Big West Conference Awards • Big West Specialty Awards
IRVINE—CSUN's De'Jionae Calloway and Deja Williams earned Big West Conference honors Monday the league announced.
Calloway was selected second-team All-Conference. The 6-0 redshirt senior led CSUN in scoring (13.5), rebounding (8.5), and field goal shooting (.455). She was second in the league in rebounding, seventh in field goal shooting, sixth in steals (1.7), and 10th in scoring. Calloway was selected Big West Player of the Week on three occasions during the 2019-20 season.
Williams was named to the Big West's All-Freshman Team. Williams tied for second on the Matadors in scoring with Jordyn Jackson at 10.3 points per game. Williams was third in the Big West in made three-pointers with 55. She scored 32 points at Hawai'i Feb. 13, 2020, the most by a CSUN player since Channon Fluker since Jan. 25, 2018 when she posted 34, also at Hawai'i.
The Matadors (12-18, 7-9 Big West) take on Cal State Fullerton (16-13, 8-8 Big West) Tuesday night in the first round of the Big West Tournament at Long Beach State. Game time is 8:30 p.m. ESPN3 will have the video stream with David Gascon on the audio call beginning at 8:20 p.m.
The other game Tuesday night features Long Beach State, the fifth-seed, facing No. 8 Cal Poly at 6 p.m. No. 3 UC Irvine plays the lowest remaining seeded team Wednesday night at 6 p.m. while No. 4 Hawai'i takes on the second lowest remaining seed at 8:30 p.m. The semifinals featuring No. 1 UC Davis and No. 2 UC Santa Barbara begin Friday at 12 p.m. at the Honda Center with the championship game coming Saturday at 3 p.m. All games will be streamed on ESPN3.
The Matadors swept the season series from the Titans. CSUN defeated Cal State Fullerton 63-57 in overtime in Northridge on Jan. 16 before handing the Titans a 57-50 defeat in Fullerton Feb. 22. The Matadors have won 19 in a row in the series against Cal State Fullerton dating back to 2011. Raina Perez was selected MVP of the Big West on Monday. She is averaging a league leading 20.3 points per game.
CSUN is making its ninth consecutive Big West Tournament appearances. The Matadors are 14-7 in BWC Tournament games. CSUN has won three tournament titles (2014, 2015, and 2018) and has made one other appearance (2006) in the finals of the tournament.
The 2018 tourney title is memorable as the Matadors came out of the five seed to take it all, winning four games in five days.
