Matadors Defeated at Cal Poly to Close Road Trip
10/10/2021 1:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-13, 1-4 Big West) closed its road trip with a 3-0 defeat at first-place Cal Poly (9-6, 5-1 Big West) on Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The Mustangs scored two first-half goals and added a third after intermission while the Matadors put four shots on goal and would earn a penalty kick but could not find the net. Amanda Delgado registered four saves in front of the net.
Cal Poly outshot CSUN 13-9 in the match and 7-4 in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 21 fouls were called with CSUN whistled for 11 of them. Briana Rios was shown the yellow card in the 72nd minute.
FIRST HALF
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute by taking advantage of a defensive miscue. With the ball played on the left side of the field, a kick across the field to the right side of the box reached Brooke Rubinstein. After a few dribbles, Rubinstein crossed the ball through the CSUN defense but the Matadors could not maintain possession and as a result, Nikki Trucco took advantage and tapped in the ball from six yards out.
After missed shots from Christiane Sundstrom and Cindy Arteaga, Cal Poly would double their lead in the 27th minute. Emily Talmi intercepted a pass and dribbled the ball unguarded along the left wing before finishing with a shot that hit inside the far post. CSUN's best opportunity of the half came in the 37th minute when Cal Poly committed a handball inside its 18-yard box resulting in a penalty kick. Alyssa Aguilar would get a chance to cut the lead in half but stellar defense from Mackenzie Samuel thwarted the penalty kick. In a wild sequence, Samuel saved a second shot from Aguilar before a third shot from Aguilar banged off the crossbar.
SECOND HALF
CSUN would be held without a shot in the second half until the 66th minute when Kacie Garrity had her shot blocked on an attempt outside the box. Moments later, CSUN appeared it might crack the scoring column when Rios was open on the left side but the Matadors were whistled for an offside. CSUN kept the ball out of its net through the midway point of the second period before the Mustangs broke through following a flurry of shots on Delgado. In the 70th minute, Delgado came off her line to save a shot from Olivia Ortiz then she hurried back to her post to deflect a pass attempt. However, a third shot from Kate Reedy banged off the crossbar and bounced just inside the goal line for the Mustangs' third goal of the day.
Despite being down 3-0, the Matadors kept battling in the final minutes of the half. Sophie Yanez would put a shot on frame in the 76th minute and Arteaga missed high minutes later from on top of the box. In the closing seconds, CSUN almost broke through with a free kick that traveled deep inside the box to Cora Willcot who deflected the ball to Ashley Cruz in front of the net. However, Cruz could not control the pass as the ball went out of bounds.
GAME NOTES
Arteaga and Aguilar had three shots apiece in the match as Aguilar had two on goal. Erin Anderson, Brooke Mobeck and Kacie Garrity all played the full 90 minutes. Sunday's match represented the 15th different starting lineup used by the Matadors this season.
The match was the 21st all-time meeting between CSUN and Cal Poly as the Mustangs evened the series at 9-9-3.
