RIVERSIDE, Calif.—UC Riverside defeated CSUN 1-0 in Big West Men's Soccer action Wednesday night at UC Riverside's Soccer Stadium.
The first shot of the match occurred in the 10th minute when Jordan Isibor missed to the right. David Preys saved Brendan Clark's attempt at the 13:11 mark, the first for the Highlanders. The Matadors pressured the UCR defense in the 23rd minute which resulted in a Jamar Ricketts shot being blocked and a throw-in. The Highlanders were able to knock the ball away and out of the UC Riverside zone. Ricketts' second shot of the night was again blocked in the 28th.
The Matadors pushed through the UCR defense in the 33rd minute. Arturo Reveles' effort was blocked. The rebound came out to Oscar Cardenas who missed high and to the left. Following a CSUN foul, the Highlanders received a free kick. The set piece resulted in an Oscar Penate shot that went high right. During the 38th minute Freymar Omarsson took a shot from just outside the 18-yard mark that was blocked. Penate had the final shot of the first half when he went high right in the 44th.
The Matadors came out firing in the second half as Michael Arrington and Giovanni Aguilar had attempts blocked by the UC Riverside defense one minute in. On the ensuing UCR possession, Adolfo Magana connected on a bicycle kick from the 18-yard line that went in on the high left side of the CSUN net for a 1-0 Highlanders' lead. Penate was credited with the assist on the play.
The teams traded a pair of shots over the next three minutes. Marvin Arias missed left during the 58th minute. The Matadors took possession two minutes later with Oscar Cardenas going low and to the left of UC Riverside's Carlos Gonzalez where the Highlanders' goalie made the save. CSUN forced a foul to earn a free kick. The set piece resulted in an Aguilar attempt that went left. The ball went off a UCR player to give the Matadors a corner kick. CSUN could not take advantage.
The Highlanders mounted a charge that ended up on Penate's foot. His shot was saved by Preys in front. UCR maintained possession and which saw Penate's effort go high and to the left. Isibor went high and to the left in the 68th for the Matadors. CSUN kept moving forward with Ricketts taking a shot that was blocked. Dylan Gonzalez's attempt went off the right post in the 71st.
The Matadors earned a pair of corner kicks in the 78th minute but could not take advantage as Gonzalez went high with a header on the second try. CSUN earned their eighth and ninth corners over the next two minutes. The Highlanders were able to turn away the Matadors each time. Gonzalez went low and to the right in the 88th where Carlos Gonzalez made the save. Penate took the final UC Riverside shot the next time down for the Highlanders. His effort went high.
CSUN outshot UCR 16-9, but the Highlanders held a 3-2 advantage with shots on goal. The Matadors recorded a season-high nine corner kicks while the Highlanders had two.
"We created 16 shots and nine corners," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We did enough to win, but we came up short."
CSUN (2-11-1, 1-3 Big West) travels to UC Davis (6-7-1, 2-2-1 Big West) Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup. Coverage will be provided by Aggies All-Access with a link on GoMatadors.com. UC Riverside is 8-5, 3-2 in the Big West.
