10/17/2021 3:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DAVIS, Calif.—UC Davis defeated CSUN 5-0 in Big West Conference Men's Soccer play Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field.
UCD jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Off a throw in, Robert Mejia dribbled in towards the CSUN goal. Matador keeper David Preys came out to challenge. Mejia would take a shot that would reach the back of the CSUN goal on the left side.
The Aggies increased the lead in the 17th minute. The Aggies began the sequence with a corner kick from the right side. The ball was sent to the left and passed back into the right. Mejia's pass found the head of Connor Tipton who scored in the bottom right of the goal.
The first CSUN attempt occurred in the 26th minute when Chris Silva went wide right from inside Derrek Chan's goalkeepers' box. The Matadors stayed aggressive, earning their fourth offsides' call two minutes later. CSUN earned their first corner kick in the 30th minute but Jamar Ricketts' ball was sent away, resulting in a goal kick for Chan.
A CSUN throw-in resulted in a chance for Giovanni Aguilar who had a shot blocked during the 33rd. Mejia threatened in the 38th. His header was on target but was saved by Cooper Wenzel (who relieved Preys in the 18th).
The Matadors went down a man with six minutes remaining in the first half when Maximillian Yankaev was issued a red card for tackle. UC Davis made it 3-0 shortly before half when Keegan Walwyn-Bent's shot from in front went off the right goalpost and in.
Wenzel was busy early, making a save on a Kevin Welch attempt two minutes into the second half. Wenzel saved Max Glasser's shot in the 51st minute, but the ball came back out on a rebound where Walwyn-Bent scored to make it 4-0. A CSUN offensive rush in the 57th minute saw the Matadors just miss putting a shot on goal as the ball would go over the end line for a UCD goal kick.
CSUN recorded back-to-back corner kicks in the 78th. The second corner resulted in a Marcos Delgado shot that was blocked. Delgado's attempt was knocked off a UCD defender and gave CSUN a third corner. The Aggies pushed away the set piece and sent the ball down the field. UC Davis' Zachary Batchleder scored with 3:35 remaining to make it the final 5-0.
Despite begin a man down for almost 53 minutes, CSUN remained aggressive and would be called for offsides nine times, a season high. UC Davis held a 15-4 shots advantage, 10-0 on goal. The Aggies recorded five corner kicks while CSUN had four. Wenzel, a freshman, made a season high five saves while Preys tallied two.
