10/20/2021 9:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN defeated Cal State Fullerton 2-1 in Big West Conference Men's Soccer action Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field.
Jordan Isibor gave the Matadors the lead in the sixth minute. Oscar Cardenas sent a through ball to Jamar Ricketts who posted a quick pass to Isibor in front where the redshirt sophomore scored his second of the year.
CSUN went up 2-0 in the 13th. Arturo Reveles drove in and took a shot that was saved by Andrea Bonavia. The rebound came back out in front to Ricketts who put the ball away for his second of the year.
The Titans got on the board in the 20th when Sebastian Cruz converted on a penalty kick. Cal State Fullerton would outshoot the Matadors 11-5 in the first half, but CSUN would hold a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Reveles opened the second half with an attempt that was saved by Jose Espino who came on in relief of Andrea Bonavia in goal. In the 60th minute a CSUN corner kick led to a Ricketts' effort that was saved by Espino. Cal State Fullerton recorded the next five shots. Two were on goal and were saved by redshirt freshman Cooper Wenzel.
With under two minutes to play, the Titans sent the ball in towards the CSUN goal and towards 6-6 midfielder Noah Dollenmayer. Dollenmayer's header went just wide of the Matador net. With 30 seconds to play, Cal State Fullerton found Dollenmayer again. This time, his bicycle kick went wide right as CSUN earned the victory.
The Titans (3-9-3, 1-5-1 Big West) outshot the Matadors 8-2 in the second for a 19-7 match advantage. Only two of the second half Titan shots were on goal. Both of CSUN's attempts were on goal in the second half which resulted in a 5-4 advantage in the category for the Matadors. Wenzel picked up his first victory of the year in net as he made three saves.
"This was a character game for us," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "After what happened to us last Sunday at UC Davis. They overpowered us. We play hard and sometimes we foul, and we must get over that. What I liked is that we showed more maturity in our fouling tonight and we showed character by beating the team that defeated Davis a couple of weeks ago in Fullerton. It shows that we are going in the right direction. We have seven (Big West) points, and we are 2-1-1 in our last four games. It is something to build on. We have a huge match against Irvine which is coached by one of my former players (Yossi Raz) and one of my best friends, so we are excited about playing such a quality team."
