CSUN Defeats UCSD to Earn First Big West Win
10/9/2021 10:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN picked up its first Big West Conference Men's Soccer win Saturday night as the Matadors defeated UC San Diego 1-0.
The Tritons nearly scored in the early going. Nick Cirrito broke away from the Matador defense, giving him a 1-on-1 opportunity against CSUN goalie David Preys. Cirrito went low and to the right where Preys made a kick save and deflected the ball away.
Jake Serpa had his attempt in the fifth minute blocked by the Matador defense. CSUN would take three shots over the next 13 minutes that would end up going high. The Tritons threatened again in the 36th when Max Carvalho put an attempt towards Preys. Preys made the save.
Thomas Mascaro would score what proved to be the gamewinning goal with 27 seconds remaining in the first half. Maximillian Yanakaev sent a pass to Esteban Camacho who sent a cross to Mascaro. Mascaro settled the ball, and he took a shot and scored.
Dominic Peters made a save of a Jamar Ricketts shot in the 51st minute. John Anderson and Arturo Reveles followed with attempts that would go wide of the net. Alessandro Allen went wide right for UCSD at the 64-minute mark. Preys turned back Max Carvalho 10 minutes later and made a save of a Noah Soenstein shot in the 79th. CIrrito appeared to score off the rebound, but the goal was waved off as it was ruled that Preys had possession of the ball, but the goal was waved off.
On the ensuing CSUN possession worked the ball in front of Peters who saved a Giovanni Aguilar shot. Coming back down, Peters was injured and had to leave the game. Nicholas Shor played the final 10 minutes in goal for UC San Diego. The final two attempts of the night were made by UCSD's Max Carvalho (in the 82nd and 84th minutes). Both times the Matador defense held. With 16 seconds remaining UC San Diego earned a corner kick. Cooper Lachenbruch sent the ball towards the CSUN goal. A Matador defender sent the ball back out as time ran out.
Preys earned his second shutout of the season and the sixth of his career. He made four saves in the match. Peters had three saves before leaving the game. CSUN outshot UCSD 9-8 with the shots on goal tied at four. The Tritons posted four corner kicks, compared to one for the Matadors. Five yellow cards were issued (four on CSUN) as 28 combined fouls were called (15-CSUN, 13-UC San Diego).
"These are my favorite kind of wins," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "UCSD is very tough to break down and if you look at their scores, they do not give up very much. We had to be technically good and patient. We improved in both of those areas, but we still made a couple errors. We are starting to get more focused, and we are getting better."
