NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN Men's and Women's Golf teams will open the 2022 seasons in February as the men tee it up Feb. 7 at the Orange County Collegiate Classic while the women get the season underway the same day at the Valley Invitational in Bakersfield.
The men's squad is coming off an impressive fall season that saw the Matadors post four top-10 finishes in five events. CSUN won its own Bill Cullum Invitational in October which set up impressive team finishes at Fresno State's Nick Watney Invitational (13-under-par) and the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate in Hawai'i (20-under-par).
Four Matador players finished the Fall season with a 73.0 or better scoring average. Blake Brothers led the team at 71.06 in five events, followed by Felix Schrott (71.13), Nick Fowlkes (72.0) and Eirik Thomassen (72.47).
"Hopefully we'll play as well if not better than we did in the Fall," said head coach Jim Bracken who is in his 36th season at the helm of the program. "Our first tournament wasn't our strongest but we definitely played better in every tournament after that. We played well at Pacific and then shot 26-under in Hawai'i which is right around the school record."
The Matadors get the Spring underway Feb. 7 at the Orange County Collegiate Classic, the first of six events CSUN will play in prior to the conference championship. The Matadors will also play at The Joust, hosted by California Baptist (Feb. 21-22), the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert (Mar. 2-3), the UC San Diego Invitational (Mar. 21-22), the Redhawk Invitational, hosted by Seattle University (Apr. 4-5) and the UCSB Intercollegiate (Apr. 11-12).
The 2022 Big West Men's Championship will be contested at La Quinta Country Club over three days in early May (1-3).Â
"We have a very competitive Spring schedule," added Bracken. "The team goal is to keep improving every tournament and ideally we'll be playing the best golf we can when the conference championship comes around in early May."
The Matador women finished the Fall with their best team score in four events, posting a total of 919 at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in late October. In addition to its eighth-place showing in Hawai'i, CSUN finished in the top-15 at the season-opening Hobble Creek Invitational in Utah.
Julia Johansson led the Matadors with a scoring average of 76.1 in two Fall events. She was CSUN's low finisher in the final two Fall events, Seattle and Hawai'i. Tiffany Pak, who ranked second to Johansson in scoring at 76.5, was the low finisher in the dual match between the Matadors and CSU Bakersfield in September.
CSUN will play five events this Spring, opening at the Valley Invitational in Bakersfield (Feb. 7-8). The Matadors then head to the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. on Feb. 28-Mar. 1 before traveling to Saint George, Utah for the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational (Mar. 10-12). CSUN's final two tournaments prior to the Big West Championship will see the Matadors travel to Boulder City, Nev. for the Jackrabbit Invitational, hosted by South Dakota State (Mar. 14-15) and Williamsburg, Va. for the William & Mary Invitational (Mar. 28-29).
The Matadors will then head to San Luis Obispo Country Club for the 2022 Big West Women's Championship (Apr. 10-12).
