PHOENIX, Ariz. - Freshman Brandon McDonough fired a one-under 70 Tuesday to finish tied for eighth during the final round of the GCU Invitational Tuesday at the GCU Championship Golf Course.
McDonough's eighth-place finish led the Matadors and was also the first career top-10 finish for the CSUN freshman. As a team, the Matadors posted a final-round (+12) 296 to move up one spot into sixth place at (+19) 871.
McDonough had three birdies and 13 pars in a virtually error-free final round. Beginning the day on the No. 4 tee, McDonough was two-under through four holes before a pair of bogeys over his next seven holes brought him back to even-par on the day. He stayed even through the next five holes before his final birdie at the par-5 third hole dropped him to one-under on the day and one-over 214 for the tournament.
CSUNÂ SCORES
"Brandon managed his game really well today. He didn't hit the ball super well but his short game was great and he got up-and-down very well. The cold and windy conditions were tough today and scores were up, but it affected all the teams. I certainly won't complain about a sixth place finish in a 15-team field."
The Matadors travel to Carlsbad to play in the SoCal Intercollegiate next week (Mar. 22-23)Â at the Club at La Costa.
