CSUN Defeats Azusa Pacific 7-0 In Home Tennis Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN defeated Azusa Pacific 7-0 in the tennis home opener for the Matadors Friday afternoon.

Jolene Coetzee, the reigning Big West Player of the Week and her partner, Ana Fraile Toboso, opened the dual with a 6-3 No. 1 doubles victory against Petra Ivankovic and Anna Savchenko. The Matadors clinched the doubles point when Jacquie Tan and Magdalena Hedrzak defeated Carolyn Brooner and Jacky Wagner 6-4 at No. 2. The Cougars' (6-1) Courtney Page and Madison Kane defeated Ekaterina Repina and Victoria Santibañez Luna 7-6 (11-9) in the No. 3 doubles match.

Sasha Turchak got singles play underway at No. 6 when she defeated Katia Betancourt 6-1, 6-1. Hedrzak swept Kane 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 before Coetzee handed Savchenko a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 2. Repina had to go to three sets to clinch the dual victory against Ivankovic at No. 1. Repina won the opening set 6-1 before Ivankovic came back to take the second set 6-1. Repina won 10-5 in a super tiebreaker for the win.

Tan also had to go the distance at No. 4 singles. She defeated Brooner 6-2 in the first set before losting 6-4 in the second. In the super tiebreaker, Tan won 10-4. Fraile Toboso went three sets against Jacky Wagner at No. 3 singles. Fraile Toboso won 6-1 in the opening set before losing 6-3 in the second. Fraile Toboso took the third set 7-5. The Matadors won all three exhibition matches and were victorious in the exhibition doubles match. Â This was the 298th dual victory for CSUN head coach Gary Victor.

"This was a tough and physical match that we were able to play through some close sets against a 6-0 team," said Victor. "The more matches we have the better we will be in the coming weeks."

The Matadors (1-1) head to Fresno State (5-3) on Sunday for a 12 p.m. dual.
