NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN junior Jolene Coetzee was named Big West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Mar. 17.
Opening the season at perennial Big West power Hawai'i, the Matadors battled in a 4-3 loss to the Rainbow Wahine. Coetzee provided the first of CSUN's three points as she opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UH's Satsuki Takamura at the No. 2 slot. Takamura had a No. 109 national ranking last year in singles at one point.
The Matadors did not clinch the doubles point, but Coetzee and partner Ana Fraile Toboso contributed to the effort. They earned a commanding 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over the Rainbow Wahine tandem of Takamura and Nikola Dolakova.
This is the second time in Coetzee's career she has been named Big West Player of the Week, marking the first time since her freshman season (Mar. 19, 2019) she has been awarded the honor via the vote of the league's coaches.
CSUN (0-1) has pair of matches on the docket this weekend. On Friday, the Matadors host Azusa Pacific. Although fans are not allowed into the Matador Tennis Complex to watch the meet, you can follow along with coverage on the CSUN Sports Network via BigWest.tv beginning with the first serve at 2 p.m.
