Matadors Fall Twice to Cal Poly
3/21/2021 7:37:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (1-2, 1-2 Big West) dropped both games of its Sunday doubleheader to Cal Poly (10-6, 2-1 Big West) at Matador Field. The Mustangs held on for a 7-6 win in the opener while CSUN was run-ruled in game two, 12-1, in seven innings. Denzel Clarke led the way offensively with four hits and two runs scored in the two games while Kai Moody and Jose Ruiz each had three hits apiece.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Mustangs built an early 4-0 lead in game one. After a single tally in the second, Cal Poly scored three runs in the third inning. The lead was in danger of growing bigger in the third if not for a key throw from Ruiz in left field. With the bases loaded and two outs, Collin Villegas hit an RBI single to left field. Ruiz would only allow one run to score on the play as he threw out Nick DiCarlo attempting to score from second base.
Shut out through the first two frames, the Matador bats exploded in the third inning for six runs. After the first two Matadors reached to start the frame, Clarke would hit a well-placed dribbler down the third-base line where pitcher Andrew Alvarez attempted to throw out Moody at third but his throw was errant, giving Moody a chance to touch home plate. Two batters later, Ruiz roped a two-run single to bring CSUN to within one. Following an Angel Mendoza single, Mason Le doubled in the tying run. Cal Poly committed another error off a groundball from Jason Ajamian then the Matadors added their sixth run on an RBI groundout from Carlos Arellano.
The Mustangs would cut the lead to 6-5 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tate Samuelson. Dwayne Angebrandt stranded two base runners in the fourth inning and retired three of four batters in the fifth inning to take a lead into the sixth.
Angebrandt ran into trouble in the sixth though as three of the first four Mustang batters reached on singles. Matt Lopez tied the game up at 6-6 on the Mustangs' fourth sacrifice fly of the game.
In the seventh, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead on one swing of the bat. Villegas belted the second pitch of the inning over the left-field fence to put Cal Poly ahead 7-6. After the home run, Jackson Cunningham rebounded to retire eight of the next 11 batters he faced, keeping the Matadors within a run.
CSUN would perhaps have its best chance to score in the bottom of the eighth when Clarke hit a two-out single to put runners at the corners. However, Mustang pitcher Bryan Woo worked out of the jam by retiring Jayson Newman on a groundout.
Kyle Scott came out of the Cal Poly bullpen to retire the Matadors in order in the ninth to secure the win.
GAME TWO RECAP
In a similar script to game one, Cal Poly jumped on the Matadors in the early innings. After putting up a two-spot in the first, Reagan Doss stroked a two-run home run just over Clarke's glove in left-center field. Doss would come through again in the third with an RBI single with two outs to push the lead to 5-0.
CSUN stranded two runners on the base paths in the second inning but got on the scoreboard in the third inning behind a one-out RBI double from Sean Skelly that plated Clarke. However, Cal Poly starter Travis Weston limited the damage by retiring the next two batters, leaving two Matadors on base.
The Mustangs extended their lead further to 6-1 in the fourth as Brooks Lee roped an RBI single with one out. Jeremy Hassel would induce an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play though to wrap up the inning.
CSUN left two more runners on base in the home half of the fifth before the Mustangs broke open the game in the sixth with a four-run frame. A run was forced in on a hit batter in the inning while DiCarlo drove in two more with a single. The lead grew to 10-1 after Joe Yorke scored on a wild pitch.
Clarke made a highlight-reel catch in the top of the seventh, taking away a home run from Lee with an outstanding leaping catch in center field. However, Cal Poly would rebound to score two more on a two-run home run from Lopez.
The Matadors would have chances to score in the sixth and seventh innings as they loaded the bases in both frames but Mustang pitching prevailed each time. With the game in danger of being suspended due to darkness, Derek True retired Arellano to end the seventh inning.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH DAVE SERRANO
"It all starts on the mound. I'll take full responsibility for that, I'm a part of the pitching staff with coach Vanderford. I think the tempo of the whole day gets set off with what the pitchers are doing. We had some long innings, a lot of pitches in innings, a lot of walks, a lot of hit batters throughout the whole day. It's been over the course of the last three games. It's something we have to get fixed. It's hard to be a good baseball team if you're not committed to not giving up free passes.
We have to have a balance. The thing we've committed to in this coaching staff is in these weekends of 36-innings in three days, we've got to play different guys and we feel like we have a lot of quality depth. I thought some guys had some good at-bats. We had some opportunities late in the game with runners in scoring position, we just couldn't get the big hit at the right time."
GAME NOTES
Dating back to last season, Clarke has now reached base safely in 15-straight games. Clarke and Moody have hits in all three games this season.
Out of the bullpen, Cunningham worked 3.1 innings in game one, allowing a run on three hits to go with two strikeouts. Zuko Tillman made his first career start on Saturday and worked 2.2 innings, surrendering three runs while striking out four batters.
UP NEXT
The Matadors look for the series split on Monday when they conclude their four-game set with Cal Poly. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The game will stream on BigWest.TV with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
