NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Savannah Favre posted three hits, but Hawai'i defeated CSUN 5-1 in the Big West softball home opener for the Matadors Friday afternoon.
Nawaui Kaupe's sacrifice fly drove in the first UH run in the top of the first inning. The Matadors loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first. Ashley Murphy, the Rainbow Wahine starting pitcher, struck out Jaclyn Silva to quiet the CSUN threat.
Hawaii loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. Eryka Gonzales relieved Kenedee Jamerson. Gonzales ran the count to 3-2 against Mya'liah Bethea before striking her out looking. Rachel Sabourin's shot was hauled in down the right-field line by Sami Garcia for the third out.
Alexis Lemus led off the CSUN third with a double. With one out, she advanced to third on a Favre single. Jaymi Steward singled through the right side to plate Lemus to tie the score. However, Favre was thrown out at third on the play. Murphy induced a Jamerson ground out to conclude the inning.
Ka'ena Kelinoi singled to lead off the top of the fifth. She stole second and took third on a CSUN error. A Matador passed ball allowed Kelinoi to score for the go-ahead run. Maya Nakamura singled in Kaupe later in the inning for a 3-1 advantage.
The Matadors threatened in the bottom of the inning. Aaliyah Swan and Favre recorded back-to-back singles with two out. Steward reached on an error to load the bases for Jamerson. Murphy again got Jamerson to ground out, this time to second for the final out.
Hawai'i looked to add to the lead in the top of the sixth, however, the Rainbow Wahine left the bases loaded. Jordan Kaeka reached on an error that allowed her to go to second to begin the bottom of the inning. After Garcia was retired, Paloma Usquiano walked. Pinch-hitter Kiarra Crockett-Pope grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed CSUN to put runners on the corners. Murphy again worked out of trouble, getting Lemus to ground out to the shortstop (unassisted) to wrap up matters.
Bre Soma's triple in the top of the seventh drove in two runs for the final four-run winning margin. CSUN would put the tying run on deck in the bottom of the seventh. Murphy, recorded her third strikeout of the game, getting Kaeka to swing at a high inside fastball for the final out of the game.
Favre would end the game 3-for-4, registering half of CSUN's hits on the day. Jetta Nannen, Kelinoi, Kaupe, and Nakamura combined for eight of the 10 Hawai'i hits (two each). The teams combined to leave 24 runners on base in the game (13 for UH, 11 for CSUN).
"I think Hawai'i came out today and played well," said CSUN head coach Charlotte Morgan. "They capitalized on their opportunities and we didn't. We didn't play very good softball as a whole. From the pitching to the defense, to the offense, the baserunning, and when you don't do anything well it is going to be hard to win. It is always about opportunities in this game and which team capitalizes and which team comes out. Hawai'i did that. When you lose it is an opportunity to learn and get better. It feels like a negative right now, but I want them to look at what they did well and what they need to do better. As a coaching staff, we have to lead them in a good way. We are all learning and making adjustments day-to-day, and hopefully, we can come out on top."
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. The games will be streamed on BigWest.tv with Brandon Marcus on the call.
