Late Second Game Rally Gives CSUN Split With Hawai'i
3/27/2021 6:30:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN rallied late in game two of a Big West Conference softball doubleheader against Hawai'i to earn a split on Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
GAME 1
Hawai'i's Jetta Nannen tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Rainbow Wahine defeated CSUN 12-0 to begin the day.
Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead in the first when Brittnee Rossi led off the game with a home run to right-center. Thanks to a pair of Jetta Nannen walks in the bottom of the opening frame, the Matadors put runners on the corners. Nannen worked out of the jam, as the Matadors could not push across a run. A Sammie Ofoia RBI ground out in the second increased the Hawai'i lead.
Rossi led off the UH third with a shot to deep right field that went off the glove of Sami Garcia. Using her speed, Rossi was able to take advantage and she circled the bases and scored for the third Hawai'i run.
Bree Soma added to the Rainbow Wahine lead with a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth. A CSUN two-out error in the fifth led to a two-RBI single from Rachel Sabourin. The Rainbow Wahine sent 11 to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs.
After issuing her third walk in the third, Nannen retired 12 consecutive Matadors before allowing a leadoff single to Alexis Lemus to begin the bottom of the sixth. After getting their second hit, the Matadors loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but could not break the shutout.
Maya Nakamura, and Bethea each posted three hits for UH. Sabourin drove in three runs.
"All you can say is let it go after a game like that," said CSUN head coach Charlotte Morgan. "This game is about failure and adversity and how you respond and learn from it. When you get humiliated, there are two things you can do. You can let it define you or you can learn and get better."
GAME 2
CSUN rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Hawai'i 4-3 in the nightcap.
UH (4-5, 4-2 Big West) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Kaupe recorded an RBI ground out. Sami Garcia's 9-3 ground out in the bottom of the second scored Kenedee Jamerson to tie the score. The Matadors took the lead in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners, Savannah Favre singled in Lemus to make it 2-1.
Kaupe tied the game in the top of the fourth when she homered to left. Bethea returned the lead to the Rainbow Wahine with a one-out RBI double. CSUN had the tying run reach third in the bottom of the fourth, but the Matadors could not push the tally across.
Paloma Usquiano hit an opposite-field double to right with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Garcia battled Murphy to a 10-pitch at-bat which resulted in a walk. Jaclyn Silva grounded back to Silva who took the sure out at first, allowing both runners to move up a base. Journey Rojas lined out to center for the final out.
Lemus led off the CSUN seventh with a double down the right-field line. With one out, Favre's blooper to left resulted in a single, but Lemus could not advance. Jaymi Steward tied the game with a double to right-center that plated Lemus as Favre went to third. Jamerson hit a grounder to Kaupe at short. Kaupe thought there were two outs and she threw down to first to get Jamerson, but Favre was able to score the game-winning run.
CSUN freshman pitcher Eryka Gonzales picked up her first career win. She went the distance, allowing just three hits. The 5-3 righty retired seven in a row at one point and 10 of the final 11 she faced. Gonzales struck out three and walked four. Favre and Steward each charted two hits. Steward posted two RBI while Lemus scored twice.
"They did a great job," said Morgan. "I challenged them to not hang onto the first game. Even though Hawai'i took a lead, we responded and kept fighting. Eryka did a great job in the circle, holding it down. If she made a mistake, she came right back. I'm excited that we were able to let the first game go and respond."
CSUN (2-4, 2-4 Big West) continues at home next week with a series against Long Beach State (-4, 5-0 Big West). The action begins on Friday at 1 p.m. with an audio call on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health by Brandon Marcus.
