UC Davis Sweeps CSUN In Friday Doubleheader
4/16/2021 8:18:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Davis took a pair of Big West softball games from CSUN Friday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
GAME 1
UC Davis came from behind to defeat CSUN 4-2 in eight innings to open the day.
Jaymi Steward's two-out, two-run home run to right center in the bottom of the first broke the seal for the Matadors.
Kenedee Jamerson got the start in the circle for the Matadors. The 5-8 lefty retired the first 10 batters she faced with only ball leaving the infield. Sommer Kisling's one-out single in the top of the fourth broke up the no-hit bid. Kisling was quickly erased on a 6-4-3 double play that Isabella Leon hit into, keeping Jamerson at the minimum through four innings.
Sarah Starks hit her team-leading sixth home run of the year to lead off the Aggies' fifth. Jamerson retired the next two batters before Libbie McMahan singled to center. She stole second where she saw Katie Steffen-Brune run the count to 3-2 before flying out to center to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Anna Dethlefson's diving liner was just missed by Maiya Alemainia in a diving attempt. Dethlefson ended the play with a triple. She took advantage of a CSUN error on the throw back into the infield to tie the score. Kisling reached on an infield single before Leon doubled to left. Eryka Gonzales relieved Jamerson to face Starks and walked the UC Davis clean-up hitter to load the bases. Gonzales retired Leah Polson on an infield fly to short. Marissa Jauregui's pop up was tracked down in foul territory by Jamerson (who moved to first base) next to the UCD dugout for the final out.
Alexis Lemus recorded an opposite field double to left center with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Steward singled up the middle and took second on the throw home as Lemus was held at third. With the infield in, Aggies' starter Kenedi Brown got up in the count 1-2 on Jamerson, but she would end up hitting Jamerson in the leg to load the bases. Brown induced a Tatum Wentworth slow roller to third where Libbie McMahon threw home before Dethlefson, the catcher, threw onto first to complete double play.
Paloma Usquiano walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Aaliyah Swan struck out. Brown sent the game into extra innings when she induced Savannah Favre into ground out to short for the final out.
Gonzales hit Dethlefson to begin the UC Davis eighth. Kisling was ruled out of the batter's box on her slap attempt from the left-hand side of the plate, giving CSUN the first out. Dethlefson stole second and advanced to third on a Gonzales wild pitch with the count 0-2 on Leon. Leon homered to right center to make it a 4-2 game. Polson singled to center with two outs. Jauregui lined out to center to wrap up matters.
Brown, the current Big West Pitcher of the Week, retired CSUN in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn her seventh victory of the season. In her league leading 13th complete game, Brown allowed six hits and struck out eight. Kisling and Leon each posted two hits to lead the Aggies.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"UC Davis did a great job in game one. But I told our pitchers that we can't guard long balls and that's exactly what they did. Offensively, we did OK, but we made a couple of errors in the field and we have to respond and played from the first pitch to the last with the same intensity."
GAME 2
UC Davis defeated CSUN 3-1 in the nightcap.
Dethlefson singled to lead off the top of the first for the Aggies. She stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball for the game's inaugural run. The Matadors had runners on second and third in both the first and second innings but could not push across the tying run.
CSUN finally broke through in the third when Lemus drove in Journey Rojas with a double to center. However, the Matadors stranded two more runners on in the third, keeping the score tied at one. CSUN threatened again in the fourth with two additions runners staying at second and third as UC Davis worked out of the jam.
The Aggies took the lead in the fifth when three consecutive hits were capped off by a Leon double that plated a pair of runs. Favre led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left field line. Rojas and Lemus both grounded out before Steward was hit by a pitch. Jamerson reached on an error by Leon at shortstop to load the bases. Usquiano grounded out to third to end the game.
The top three batters in the UC Davis order, Dethiferson, Kisling, Leon, combined for all seven of the Aggies' hits in game two. Taylor Fitzgerald tossed a complete-game six-hitter. Fitzgerald struck out five and walked two. CSUN would leave 11 on in game two. Lemus and Favre both had two hits.
ACCORDING TO COACH MORGAN
"It comes down to opportunities. We left 11 on-base and had our opportunities. We have to have to have better at-bats and play our game. It's a game of opportunities, if we continue to plug away it will come to us. Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and improve."
CSUN (2-12, 2-12 Big West) and UC Davis (12-18, 6-5 Big West) conclude the series on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon on BigWest.tv.
