NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Davis defeated CSUN 3-1 in the Big West softball series finale between the two schools Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond
Sommer Kisling's two-out RBI single in the top of the third drove in Sarah Nakahara for the game's first run. Tatum Wentworth singled with one out in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Savannah Farve walked on four straight Sarah Reineman pitches. Journey Rojas's liner was grabbed by third baseman Libbie McMahon to keep the score 1-0.
Wentworth recorded her second hit of the game, a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth. Wentworth would be stranded as Reineman got Aaliyah Swan to foul out for the final out of the frame.
Sarah Starks' two-run home run with one out in the top of the sixth extended the lead to three. Reineman went the first five innings for UC Davis (13-18, 7-5 Big West) before giving way to Kenedi Brown who walked Favre to begin the sixth. Rojas' opposite-field single to right advanced Farve to second. Brown ended Alexis Lemus' 11-game hitting streak as she struck out the CSUN designated player. Jaymi Steward doubled to right to score Favre.
With the infield in, Kenedee Jamerson hit a slow bouncer to McMahan who looked the runners back and threw onto first for the second out. Paloma Usquiano grounded out to short for the final out.
Pinch-hitter Megan Bower hit a double with one out in the top of the seventh. Nakahara's hot shot to first was fielded by Jamerson who recorded the second out as Bower took third. Anna ERyka Gonzales struck out Dethiefson to keep the Aggies at bay.
Wentworth reached base for the third time in the game when she walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Brown struck out Swan before getting Favre to ground out to end the game.
Gonzales, a freshman, recorded a new season-high in strikeouts with seven. She allowed just five hits in her fifth complete game of the year. Reineman and Brown combined on a four-hitter.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"I thought Eryka pitched well today. She made adjustments but she was hurt by one pitch late. Offensively, we have to do a better job of support. We have to attack earlier; four hits is not going to get the job done. We are still working and competing, but I am not satisfied when I feel that we didn't play our best."
CSUN (2-13, 2-13 Big West) travels to UC Riverside (4-18, 3-10 Big West) Apr. 24-25. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. on both days.
