UC Riverside Takes A Pair From CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Riverside swept CSUN in a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
GAME 1
Marissa Burk's home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference as UC Riverside defeated CSUN 2-1 to begin the day.
CSUN starter Kenedee Jamerson retired the first six Highlanders she faced before allowing a leadoff single to Briza Blanco in the bottom of the third. Maiah Motta successfully sacrificed Blanco to second with a bunt. Leah Brito singled up the middle which moved Blanco to third. Both runners would advance a base on the play due to a CSUN error. Jamerson bounced back and retired the next two batters to get the Matadors out of the inning.
UC Riverside starter Chrys Hildebrand issued a walk and hit a Matador, but she struck out seven of the first 11 CSUN batters she faced before allowing her first hit, a Jaymi Steward single with two outs in the top of the fourth. Steward was thrown out attempting to steal to conclude the frame. Tatum Wentworth walked with one out in the fifth but would go no further.
Blanco singled for the second time with one out in the fifth. Jamerson struck out Motta before getting Brito to ground into a 4-6 fielder's choice to end the inning.
Aaliyah Swan reached on a UCR fielding error to begin the top of the sixth. With the count 1-2 on Alexis Lemus, Swan stole second. After a nine-pitch at-bat, Hildebrand forced a Lemus fly out to left. Journey Rojas went deep in the count against Hildebrand and after eight pitches, she worked out a walk. Savannah Favre would fly out to center. Steward worked the count to 3-0 before she hit a grounder to short that was booted by Lauryn Garewal which allowed Swan to score and Rojas to get to second. Jamerson grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice for the third out. Burk's game-winning home run was her third of the year.
Sami Garcia singled to left with one out in the top of the seventh. Hildebrand struck Paloma Usquiano before Swan walked on four pitches to bring Lemus up. With the count 1-1, Lemus popped up to second to end the game.
Hildebrand tossed a complete-game two-hitter. She would end up striking out 10 while walking four. Jamerson took the hard-luck loss. She also went the distance, allowing just four hits. She struck out three and walked one.
GAME 2
The Highlanders completed the sweep by defeating the Matadors 3-2 in the nightcap.
Gianna Araki's two-run home run in the bottom of the second opened the scoring for the Highlanders. Swan got the CSUN third underway with an opposite-field single to right. Lemus followed with a single through the right side. Both runners moved up a base on a Katie Barabarick wild pitch. Barabarick struck out Rojas to get the first out. Favre hit a grounder to Burk, the UCR shortstop. Burk threw home and was able to get Swan at the plate. Steward grounded back to Barabarick in the circle for the final out.
The Highlanders worked out a pair of walks against Eryka Gonzales with one out in the bottom of the third. Katherine Montuya sacrificed both runners up a base. Gonzales worked her way back and struck out Kennedi Sorensen looking to complete the inning.
Garcia doubled to lead off the Matadors' fourth. Jamerson grounded out to short, but Garcia could not advance. Wentworth reached on an error by Montuya, but Garcia could not move up a base. Usquiano walked to load the bases. Barabarick struck out Swan looking. Lemus ended the inning when she grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice.
Araki struck again in the bottom of the fourth, beginning the inning with a double. Gonzales struck out Allison Troche before Araki stole third. Blanco's sacrifice fly plated Araki. Motta grounded out to end the inning.
Lemus recorded her second hit of the game, a double, with one out in the top of the seventh. Rojas followed with a single. Both Matadors moved up a base as Montuya, the third baseman, committed an error on the play. Favre singled up the middle to score Lemus as Rojas took third. Steward's sacrifice fly plated Rojas to cut the lead to 3-2. Caitlyn Rivera relieved Barabarick to face Garcia who popped out to short for the final out of the day.
CSUN outhit UCR 7-4. The Matadors stranded nine runners on base, compared to three for the Highlanders. Barabarick struck out four and walked two to earn the win while Rivera picked up the save. Gonzales took the loss, in registering a complete game. struck out six and walked two.

"Today was a tough one. UCR did what they had to do to win both games. We fought hard in both games, but we just need to make better in-game adjustments. We have to keep getting better and learning from every opportunity. A new opportunity comes tomorrow and we have to be ready for it."
