SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Blake Brothers continued his solid 2021 season Monday, firing rounds of 71-67 to sit atop the leaderboard at the St. Mark Intercollegiate at St. Mark Golf Club.
Brothers began the opening round on the No. 13 tee and after a birdie at No. 15, he remained one-under through seven holes. A pair of bogeys over his next three holes dropped him to one-over for the round before five consecutive birdies brought him to four-under. Brothers added four more birdies in round two and got as low as two-under through seven holes. After a bogey 5 at No. 10 dropped him to one-over, he birdied the par-3 11th to get to one-under in the second round and (-4) 138 on the day.
Brothers is tied with UCSD's Ryan Vaughan (66-72) for first heading into the final round.
As a team, the Matadors posted team rounds of 276-290 and are two shots behind host UC San Diego (565) in the three-team field. CSUN's opening round 276 was a team low for 18 holes this season and the Matadors' 36-hole total of 566 is also a season-low.
CSUNÂ SCORES
COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"I thought we could have shot a little lower than one-under but we're looking for a good team score tomorrow. Blake played solid golf, he wasn't really satisfied with his play in round one and would like to post another solid round tomorrow and win the event. Brandon bogeyed his final hole so that left a sour taste in his mouth but he played well. Tomas is starting to play back into form and he's peaking at the right time of the year."
CSUN, UC Riverside and UC San Diego will tee off the final round Tuesday morning beginning at 7:15 a.m. .
