NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Cal State Fullerton defeated CSUN 4-1 in the final regular-season Big West women's tennis dual Wednesday afternoon.
YuSeung Suh and Natalie Duffy defeated Jacquie Tan and Jenna Dorian 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to begin the day. Camila Garcia and Jadie Acidera clinched the doubles point when they defeated Magadlena Hedrzak and Sasha Turchak 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles match.
Misaki Kobayshi led Ekaterina Repina 5-4 in the first set of the No. 1 singles match before Repina was forced to retire, handing Kobayshi the victory. Magadlena Hedrzak handed Eira Tobrand a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at No. 2 singles for the lone CSUN point of the dual.
Juliette Daries defeated Jenna Dorian 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles before YuSeung Suh defeated Jacquie Tan 6-4, 6-3 for the fourth and final Cal State Fullerton point.
"We need to find one more point in the next week," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "This was essentially a 3-4 match with Ana a game away and Sasha up 4-1 in the third. Give credit to Fullerton for being tougher at the moment. Magda is playing outstanding and mature tennis. We came out a little bit tight with the three-seed on the line. We are going to work on getting healthy in the next week and play to our strengths."
With the victory, the Titans (12-5, 6-2 Big West) have clinched at the No. 2 seed in next week's Big West Tournament. Cal Poly (11-2) is 5-2 in league play and plays at UC Riverside on Saturday. Even if the Mustangs and Titans tie for second, Cal State Fullerton holds the tiebreaker against Cal Poly of head-to-head competition.
With the loss, the Matadors (7-5, 4-4 Big West) will have to wait for this weekend's action involving UC Davis (6-7, 3-3 Big West) and Hawai'i (5-7, 3-4 Big West). UC Davis is at UC San Diego on Saturday UC Irvine on Sunday. Hawai'i is at UC Riverside on Sunday. Those duals will help determine the final seeding at the tournament which begins Apr. 29 in Irvine.
