4/29/2021 6:07:00 PM | Women's Tennis
IRVINE, Calif.—Cal Poly, the third seed, defeated CSUN, the sixth seed 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Thursday afternoon at Orange County Great Park.
The Mustangs' (13-2) No. 3 doubles team of Dominque Stone and MacKenzie Worsnop opened the meet by handing CSUN's (7-6) Jacquie Tan and Jenna Dorian a 6-1 defeat. Sasha Turchak and Magdalena Hedrzak defeated Melissa LaMette and Delane Dunkle 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to even doubles play. Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu earned the doubles point for Cal Poly by defeating Ekaterina Repina and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreaker.
Ackerman extended the Mustangs' lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tan at No. 5 singles. Repina got the Matadors on the board, defeating Stone 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 Hedrzak took the lead when she defeated Bhunu in the first set 6-4. Bhunu tied the match 6-2 in the second set. Bhunu dealt Hedrzak her first singles loss of the season (7-1) when she took the third 6-1.
At No. 3, Fraile Toboso kept the Matadors alive. She went up a set when she defeated LaMette 6-2. LaMette tied the match 6-4 before Fraile Toboso won the match 6-3 in the third.
At No.4 Turchak won the opening set against Dunkle 6-3. Dunkle sent the match to a third set after winning the second 6-3. Dunkle clinched the dual for the Mustangs as she won 6-4 in the third. Morain was up 5-2 in the third final set of her match at No. 6 singles before the dual was ended.
"I couldn't be prouder of how the team competed today," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "This was a uniquely challenging season for all, but we have the added disadvantage of having no preseason and starting in the middle of February. Through these challenges and injuries, we continue to improve, and we were within just a few points a beating a very good team today. Anna has been coming into her own in the last couple of weeks and today magnified that. Kat was completely dominant. Jenna was up 5-2 in the third and showed the heart of a lion and coming back from a tough first set loss. Sasha battled to the very last point which would have put her at five-all in the third had she won that point. We are all appreciative of the opportunity to compete and James and I are extremely proud of this group for all they have sacrificed."
