IRVINE, Calif.—CSUN opened the 2021 Big West Track and Field Championship Thursday at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.

WOMEN
Brianna Kelpis scored in her second event of the championship as she finished sixth in the javelin. Kelpis' top mark was 118-11 which occurred on her sixth and final attempt. She has now earned All-Conference honors both the javelin and heptathlon.

Heidi Eligio posted a time of 5:03.95 in the 1500m preliminaries. She was 10th in her heat and 20th overall. She did not advance to the finals.

Thanks to Kelpis, the Matador women have scored four points which puts CSUN in ninth-place. Cal Poly leads with 63.5 points.Â

MEN
Jonathan Perez finished 17th in hammer throw. He recorded a toss of 145-1 on his first attempt before fouling on his next two. Perez did not advance to the finals.

Eric Vivanco recorded a time of :22:32 in the 200m preliminaries. He was fifth in his heat, 15th overall. He did not advance to the finals.

The CSUN men have not scored. Long Beach State leads the men's team race with 58 points.

"Brianna Kelpis got things started today with a solid sixth place performance in the javelin. We will encounter many challenges as a team this weekend and all I want to know, is who will rise to the challenge."
The Big West Championship continues Friday. Action begins at 10 a.m. with the first field event (women's high jump) with the first running event (the trials of the women's 100m hurdles) scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
