NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN softball team closes out the 2021 regular season this weekend.
Â
The Matadors host UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series that begins Friday afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. single game. CSUN will honor senior Journey Rojas before the start of Saturday's game in a ceremony recognizing her accomplishments within the Matador program. Â
Â
On Sunday, CSUN hosts the USA Softball Women's National Team in a 10-inning contest that gets underway at 1:30 p.m.
Â
Friday's doubleheader will be streamed on BigWest.tv with Saturday's game featuring an audio-only call. Brandon Marcus will be doing the play-by-play for each game. On Sunday, CSUN Hall of Famer Barb Jordan will join Marcus for the coverage of the USA Softball outing.
Â
UC Santa Barbara swept UC Riverside last weekend at home to improve to 13-30 overall, 10-11 in Big West play. Madelyn McNally is ranked in the top 10 in the Big West in several offensive categories. McNally is second in triples (4), fifth in stolen bases (11), seventh in batting (.397), and 10th in on-base percentage (.443).
Â
Junior right hander Emily Schuttish has won 10 of the 13 UCSB games this season. She is 10-13 overall with a 3.46 ERA. Schuttish has struck out 78 in 133.2 innings this season. Schuttish ranks third in the Big West in innings pitched, fourth in wins, fourth in shutouts (2), and fifth in strikeouts.
Â
This is the 115th, 116th, and 117th times that the teams are playing with CSUN leading the all-time series 71-42-1.
Â
CSUN and the USA Softball Women's National Team were to have played on Mar. 10, 2020, in Santee, Calif., but rain forced the cancellation of that game. On the dirt of Matador Diamond, the two clubs will play a 10-inning exhibition game. Members of the National Team will play alongside CSUN during the day.
Â
This is the final game of a two-week training camp for the WNT who have defeated San Diego 5-0 (May 6) and Loyola Marymount 9-1 (May 10).
Â
Only family members of current student-athletes will be allowed to attend the remaining games in person, subject to limited capacity. Capacity will be prioritized by student-athlete graduation class. Family members that are California residents will be given access to register to attend each game on the Monday before the series. Registration will close on Wednesday at 5 pm. Guests will receive a confirmation before the game.
Â
CSUN is 5-18, 3-18 in Big West play after dropping three games at UC San Diego last weekend. Rojas is the lone senior on the CSUN squad this season who will be graduating on time and is not planning on returning to the Matadors thanks to the COVID-19 waiver the NCAA has issued to student-athletes.
Â
Rojas is closing out her CSUN career strong. Against UC San Diego May 7-8, Rojas hit .375 with one RBI. She enters this weekend hitting .234 with two RBI and six runs scored.
