NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Athletics is mourning the loss of former women's tennis player Rani Setiawati who passed away on May 5 after suffering injuries in a cycling accident.
Â
"Rani made everyone laugh all the time," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "She was humble and talented; Rani was an All-Conference player who helped us win the 2001 Big Sky Conference championship. Rani visited us from Indonesia several times over the years and we always laughed together. Our thoughts go out to Rani's husband, Budi, and her mother and sister. Rani's loss leaves a gaping hole in our hearts."
Â
Setiawati played for CSUN from 2000-03 and was a member of the Matador squad that won the 2001 Big Sky championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. She was selected All-Big Sky Conference in 2001.
Â
A two-time second-team Big West All-Conference selection (2002, 03) in singles, Setiawati completed her singles career with a 42-22 record. Her .656 winning percentage is the 10th highest in school history.
Â
Setiawati was named first-team All-Big West Conference in doubles in 2003 with Tereza Simonyan and was chosen honorable mention All-Big West Conference in doubles with Veronika Wagner in 2002. She compiled a 33-18 career doubles mark. Her .647 winning percentage in doubles is the eighth-best in school history.
Â
"We are deeply saddened to hear of Rani's passing," Director of Athletics Mike Izzi said. "Any loss of life is tragic and to lose a member of the Matador family is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rani's family at this extremely difficult time."
