LA QUINTA, Calif. - Paul-Louis Gachet is in the top-10 while the CSUN men's golf team is sixth after the opening-round of the 2021 Big West Men's Golf Championship Sunday at La Quinta Country Club.Â
As a team, the Matadors posted an opening round 302 (+14)Â and are sixth in the nine-team field. Long Beach State is the lone team under par as the Beach posted a 287 (-1) to lead by nine shots over both Cal Poly (296) and UC Davis (296). UC Santa Barbara (299), Cal State Fullerton (300), the Matadors (302), Hawai'i (303), UC Irvine (311) and UC Riverside (331) round out the championship field.
Gachet had a pair of birdies on the front nine Sunday, making the turn at one-under. He added one more birdie on the back nine but also had four bogeys to finish at two-over 74. Gachet heads into the second round just four shots off the pace set by Lucas Carper of UC Davis who posted a 70 (-2).
CSUNÂ SCORES
"We played a majority of the round ok today, we just finished poorly. I think we collectively gave away nine shots over the last four holes. Lots of other teams did the same thing, while Long Beach State didn't and that's why they're leading. We're not discouraged and won't put our heads down. Tomorrow is a key day for us and we'll look to play a little more consistently and move up a few spots."
CSUN will be paired with Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine for the second round which gets underway Monday at 11:20 a.m.
