Kelpis Opens Big West Heptathlon

IRVINE, Calif.—Brianna Kelpis sits in ninth position (2,512 points) after the completion of day one of the Big West Conference Heptathlon Friday afternoon.

Kelpis began the meet by running :15.59 in the 100m hurdles to finish ninth for 765 points. Event two was the high jump. Kelpis cleared 4-8 1/4 on her first attempt but went out when the bar was set at 4-9 1/2 which resulted in a tie for eighth in the event with Sofia Bailey of UC Santa Barbara. Both recorded 544 points for the high jump.

Up next was the shot put where she recorded a season-best toss of 37-5 on her third attempt. Kelpis finished fourth overall, scoring 621 points. In the final event of the day, Kelpis ran a 200m for the first time in 2021. She recorded a time of :28.63 to place 10th and earn 582 points.

"We hit a few hurdles today," said CSUN head coach Justin Johnson. "Brianna was able to stay composed. She is a competitor, so I trust she will bounce back for day two."

The competition concludes Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. with the final three events; the long jump, javelin, and 800m.
