Kelpis Scores In Big West Heptathlon

IRVINE, Calif.—Brianna Kelpis finished eighth in the Big West Conference Heptathlon Saturday afternoon. With her finish, Kelpis scored one point for the Matadors for next week's Big West Conference Championship.

Kelpis opened the day by finishing seventh in the long jump with a leap of 16-1 1/2. The performance earned Kelpis 535 points.

Kelpis recorded a season-best in the javelin when she recorded a toss of 119-10 on her first attempt. She finished first in the event, earning 601 points. Kelpis' throw was the eighth-best by a freshman in the javelin in the history of the CSUN program.

Kelpis completed the day by running the 800m in a time of 2:44.08 to score 527 points and finish 10th in the race. Kelpis scored 4,175 points in her first career heptathlon. Her performance was the sixth best by CSUN freshman in program history.

"Brianna showed a lot of heart this weekend," said CSUN head coach Justin Johnson. "As she worked through injury, she put herself in a position to score. I'm very proud of the effort she put forth. I believe we will see great things from this young lady in the future."

The Big West Conference Track and Field Championship is now a three-day event, beginning Thursday May 13 and running through Saturday May 15. Thursday's action begins with the field events at 10 a.m. The first round of track trials is set for 5 p.m.
