CSUN Opens MPSF Championships with Men in Fourth and Women in Eighth After Day One

RENO, Nev.---The CSUN Track & Field teams kicked off the 2026 MPSF Championships on Sunday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
CSUN's men's team posted 20 points to place fourth out of seven teams behind a runner-up finish from Tylor Connelly in the weight throw. The Matador women totaled 18.50 points to place eighth out of 13 teams, highlighted by second place finishes from Emily Hutchinson in the weight throw and Chandler Smith in the long jump.Â
TOP MEN'S PERFORMANCES
Connelly paced the CSUN men in the weight throw, launching a best throw of 19.56m (64-2.25) to take second place overall and score eight team points. Isaiah Butler also scored in the event, finishing fourth place with a PR of 18.28m (59-11.75) for five team points. Francisco Isiordia would also reach the finals and finish ninth overall with a PR of 15.85m (52-0).Â
In the 4000m distance medley relay, the Matador quartet of Adam Divinity, Terence Williams, Raul Verges and Elijah Stenberg were fourth out of seven teams with a time of 10:06.74 to capture five team points.Â
Daniel Harper was the final Matador to score points on day one, picking up two points in the 200m where he was seventh with a time of 21.48. Walter Pierce nearly scored as well in the event as he finished ninth with a time of 21.58. Caleb Harrell was 13th in the event at 22.10 and Jayden Smith was 15th at 22.55.Â
In the 60m prelims, Harrell advanced to the finals on Monday as he set a PR of 6.83 to take seventh place overall. Harper missed the cut for the final, but took ninth place with a time of 6.88 while Layne Buck was 11th at 7.06.Â
Finally in the men's long jump, Buck was the top Matador, taking 10th place with a leap of 6.90m (22-7.75). Matthew Browner would finish 11th in the event with a mark of 6.60m (21-8).Â
TOP WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES
After not competing at last year's MPSF Championships, Hutchinson led the Matadors in the weight throw on Sunday as she scored eight team points and second place with a toss of 18.12m (59-5.5). Myli Level also scored in the weight throw, taking seventh place with a PR toss of 16.88m (55-4.75). Katherine Shipp-Davis reached the finals, finishing ninth at 16.34m (53-7.5) while Amani Britton was 20th at 14.37m (47-1.75).Â
Chandler Smith enjoyed a strong day in the long jump where she was second overall, capturing eight team points for CSUN. Her best jump of 5.92m (19-5.25) tied for the fifth-best mark in the Matadors' indoor history. Simone Smith took 16th place in the event with a leap of 5.24m (17.25) followed by Camryn Harris in 19th place at 5.13m (16-10).Â
CSUN had a pair score 0.25 points in the high jump as both Ashleigh Porter and Naomi Sachs tied for eighth place with their best marks of 1.64m (5-4.5).Â
In the 60m prelims, two Matadors advanced to the finals on Monday. Hannah Bridge took sixth place with a time of 7.52 to set a PR and post the eighth-best mark in CSUN indoor history. Serena Grace also made it to the finals, finishing seventh with a time of 7.53. Makyla Jones was 12th in the event at 7.64 followed by Amaya Rice in 15th at 7.67 and Chandler Smith in 24th at 7.83.Â
Jones was the top Matador in the 200m, setting a PR of 24.30 to finish 10th overall. That time ranked ninth-best in CSUN's indoor history. Grace also competed in the 200m, placing 16th at 24.62 while Bridge set a PR of 24.62 to finish 17th and Brianna Wells ran a new PR of 24.98 to take 22nd.Â
In the 5000m, Ami Jacobson paced Matador runners with her time of 18:02.43 to finish 16th on the day. Brianna Torres was 22nd overall in the event at 18:26.60.Â

CSUN wraps up the 2026 MPSF Indoor Championships on Monday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The Matador men is scheduled to compete in eight events (60m, mile, 400m, high jump, shot put, 800m, 3000m and 4x400m relay) while the women will participate in six events (60m, shot put, triple jump, 400m, 3000m and 4x400m relay).
