NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Goalkeeper Amanda Delgado was named to the 11-member 2021 Preseason All-Big West Team while CSUN Women's Soccer was picked to finish fifth by the conference's head coaches, the league office announced Thursday.
Originally from Downey, Calif., Delgado completed a career season for the Matadors in 2019 when she earned All-Big Second Team honors. In 19 matches, Delgado posted new personal bests in goals-against-average (0.98), saves (76), save percentage (.800), wins (9), shutouts (8) and minutes in goal (1743:18). She led the Big West in GAA, save percentage and minutes in goal while she shared the conference lead in shutouts. Delgado's best work would come in Big West play where she recorded a 0.86 GAA with five victories and four shutouts. Seven of her eight shutouts on the year came at Matador Soccer Field including all four in conference play.
Long Beach State finished first in the preseason poll with 106 points and one first-place vote while Cal State Fullerton (two first-place votes) came in second with 104 points and UC Irvine (four first-place votes) and UC Santa Barbara (two first-place votes) were tied for third with 94 points. CSUN finished with 75 points in fifth place followed by Hawai'i (65 points), Cal Poly (59 points, one first-place vote), UC Davis (51 points, one first-place vote), UC San Diego (34 points), UC Riverside (32 points) and CSU Bakersfield (12 points).
The 2020 women's soccer season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2019, the Matadors tied a school-record with 12 wins and finished tied for second place in the Big West Conference standings. CSUN would advance to the Big West Tournament title game for the second time in three seasons, eventually falling to Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors' defense was among the best in the Big West two years ago as they posted a conference-leading 0.87 GAA while the team shared the league lead in shutouts with Fullerton.
CSUN returns 17 letterwinners this season including four who earned Big West awards in 2019. Along with Delgado's all-conference recognition, forward Alexis White and midfielder Sydney Gilbert received All-Big West Honorable Mention accolades in 2019 while defender Kacie Garrity earned a spot on the Big West All-Freshman Team.
The Matadors open the 2021 season on Thursday, Aug. 19 hosting Big West-rival Long Beach State at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match.
