Pacific Defeats CSUN 2-1 On 87th Minute Goal
8/29/2021 10:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Ryan Her's goal off a direct kick with 3:44 remaining in the second half lifted The University of Pacific past CSUN 2-1 in men's soccer action Sunday night at Matador Soccer Field.
The Matadors threatened early taking three shots in the first 5+ minutes that resulted in Eric Cotton having to make three saves from point-blank range for the Tigers. A Jamar Ricketts' effort in the 11th minute was just turned away by Cotton. Samuel Villalta did not record Pacific's first shot until the 12th minute. CSUN would outshoot UOP 9-3 in the first half with Cotton making six saves.
Things turned in favor of the Tigers 14 minutes in the second half when Emory Rapaport used his head to turn a Villalta direct kick into the Matadors' goal for a 1-0 lead. CSUN tied the score a little under six minutes later when freshman Arturo Reveles earned his first tally in a CSUN uniform. Giovanni Aguilar passed the ball to Reveles just outside the 18 where he took two dribbles and went low to get past Cotton.
The Matadors looked to take the lead on their ensuing possession. Julian Martinez had a shot blocked. The ball came out front where Edson Palos' attempt was turned away by Cotton in front. Neither team registered a shot attempt for over 20 minutes until Yazid Omri went high. The stage was set for Her's game winner when the Matadors committed a foul just outside the goalkeeper's box. Ker stepped up and went to the right of CSUN keeper David Preys for the 2-1 lead. The Matadors pressed with the final shot attempt of the night coming with one second remaining when Oscar Cardenas went for a blast from 25 yards out. Cotton was able to make his eighth save of the night to secure the victory for Pacific.
"We have to continue to enjoy the process of playing against good teams," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We want to win. When you play at this level, wins and losses are what matters. But as coaches, we have to have an open mindset to figure out how to improve as players and go through the process to learn how to win."
CSUN would outshoot UOP 13-7 for the match, 9-4 on goal. Preys ended the night with two saves. Both teams had four corner kicks. The Matadors return to the road on Sept. 2 when CSUN heads to Utah Valley. Kick is set for 6:30 p.m. PDT on ESPN+.
NOTES—10 of the 18 players who played for CSUN were in their first year of competition for the Matadors…Despite being in the Big West at the same time, this was only the third meeting between CSUN and Pacific. UOP didn't bring back men's soccer until after the Tigers moved to the West Coast Conference…A crowd of 615 attended the game.
