NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN men's soccer team travels out of state for the first time Thursday night when the Matadors head to Utah Valley. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PDT and will be available on ESPN+.
Â
The Wolverines are 1-0-1 after completing a trip to upstate New York Sunday with a 2-1 victory at Niagara. Three different players have scored for UVU this season with Zahir Vazquez getting the game-winner at Niagara.
Â
Joseph Wheelright has played all 200 minutes for Utah Valley in goal this season. He has made six saves. This is the fifth meeting between CSUN and UVU with the Matadors leading the all-time series 2-1-1. The teams played to a 2-2 tie in the last match between the clubs in 2019.
Â
CSUN dropped a 2-0 decision at San Diego State Aug. 26 to open the 2021 campaign. The Aztecs scored twice in the final 8:26 of the match to earn the victory. Omar Grey had two of the nine Matadors' shots while David Preys made three saves.
Â
Ryan Her's goal off a direct kick with 3:44 remaining in the second half lifted The University of Pacific past CSUN 2-1 Aug. 29 at Matador Soccer Field. After a scoreless first half, things turned in favor of the Tigers 14 minutes in the second when Emory Rapaport used his head to turn a Villalta direct kick into the Matadors' goal for a 1-0 lead. CSUN tied the score a little under six minutes later when freshman Arturo Reveles earned his first tally in a CSUN uniform. Giovanni Aguilar passed the ball to Reveles just outside the 18 where he took two dribbles and went low to get past Cotton.
Â
The youth movement is on in the CSUN program. Opening night at San Diego State featured eight Matadors (of the 17 who saw action) playing in their first game in a CSUN uniform. Against Pacific Aug. 29, 10-of-18 Matadors who were on the pitch were in their first year of competition at CSUN. The Matadors have 12 freshmen (either true or redshirt) on the 28-man roster with two other players who are transferring into the CSUN program.
