ASU outshot CSUN 22-8 in the match and led 12-6 in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went the Sun Devils' way at 8-4. CSUN was whistled for eight fouls while ASU had five fouls. Dayne Wagner was shown the yellow card in the 85th minute of play.
FIRST HALF
ASU pressed the ball in the early minutes of the game, putting pressure on the Matador defense to make plays. The Sun Devils earned four corner kicks in the early 17-plus minutes but were turned away each time while three shots were blocked and Bornhauser made a save in the eighth minute. Aguilar put a shot on goal for the Matadors as goalkeeper Birta Gudlaugs made a two-handed stop. After the ball was knocked away on a CSUN drive, the Matadors earned a corner kick that led to the game's first goal. Ashly Torres took the corner and delivered a solid pass into the box that traveled to Anderson who headed the ball into the netting to give CSUN a 1-0 lead.
ASU though responded quickly after the Matador goal. On a drive up the field, Jayda Hylton-Pelaia was taken down inside the box that resulted in a penalty kick. Nicole Douglas took the shot and hit the equalizer in the 24th minute. Seven minutes later, Douglas would strike again, this time after a long pass up the field where she beat Bornhauser for the goal. ASU went back on the attack in the 39th minute, once again moving up the field leading to a cross from Dai Williams for Kennedy Mayo who found the right corner of the net to put the Sun Devils ahead 3-1.
SECOND HALF
The second half began much like the first with ASU pressing the CSUN defense. Bornhauser left her feet to make a save off the foot of Douglas just seconds into the period. After a pair of ASU corner kicks, the Sun Devils took advantage of a CSUN turnover to drive up the field where Douglas beat the CSUN defense on the run. Douglas found the corner of the net for her third goal of the game.
Looking up at a three-goal deficit, the Matadors continued to battle down the stretch of the half. CSUN would capitalize off a long pass from Cindy Arteaga that traveled up the middle of the field in the 76th minute. Aguilar would run the ball down, fight to maintain possession and tap the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Gudlaugs into the net. However, CSUN could not get any closer in the closing minutes as the Sun Devils held on for the 4-2 win.
GAME NOTES
Anderson's first career goal came against her former team of Arizona State. The CSUN newcomer spent two seasons with ASU but never played in a regular-season game with the program before transferring to the Matadors ahead of this season.
With Aguilar and Anderson's goals, the Matadors have four goals this season from four different players. Torres also registered her first career assist and point with CSUN. Aguilar led the team on Thursday with two shots, both of which were on goal.
UP NEXT
CSUN wraps up its stay in Tempe with a Sunday morning match against Arizona in a neutral-site game starting at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
