Matadors Continue Road Swing against #21 Arizona State, Arizona

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-3) heads to Arizona for a pair of matches at the Sun Devil Classic against Pac-12 opponents this week. The Matadors take on host Arizona State on Thursday at 10 a.m. PST before facing Arizona in a neutral-site game on Sunday at 11 a.m. PST. CSUN's Thursday game will air via an ASU Live Stream while Sunday's match will broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
The Matadors kicked off a six-game road stretch with a pair of losses last week. CSUN dropped the opener at nationally-ranked Stanford (7-0) last Thursday before losing a heartbreaker in double overtime at UC Irvine (2-1) in a non-conference contest on Sunday.
Stanford controlled the game with the Matadors from start to finish, scoring four goals in the first half and three in the second half. CSUN posted four shots, all of which in the second half, with Ashly Torres putting a shot on goal. Matador goalkeepers combined to total 10 saves.
CSUN would get started quickly against UC Irvine three nights later. Sophie Yanez scored her first career goal in the 10th minute to give the Matadors the early lead. CSUN's held the 1-0 advantage until the 44th minute when the Anteaters evened the game up on a goal from Scarlett Camberos. The game remained tied through the end of the regulation and the first overtime period before UCI picked up the game-winner early into the second overtime. In the 102nd minute, Chloe Ragon netted the golden goal with a tapper near the net to give UCI the 2-1 victory.
Elizabeth Bornhauser made her CSUN debut in the second half of the Stanford game, registering five saves. She would start her first career game in net against UC Irvine where she racked up six saves.
Through three games, three different Matadors have scored goals in 2021 including a pair of first-time scorers. Ashley Cruz scored her first career goal in the victory over Iowa State on Aug. 22 while Yanez picked up her first goal and points last Sunday. Defender Kacie Garrity, who registered the game-winner versus Iowa State, has two career goals with the Matadors. In addition, both Cindy Arteaga and Dayne Wagner collected their first career assists this season.
Thus far in 2021, nine Matadors have made her debut on the field with the program, which include Bornhauser, Wagner, Torres, Sami Alarcon, Erin Anderson, Angelica Claiborne, Brooke Mobeck, Christiane Sundstrom and Riley Goossen-Brown. All, with the exception of Mobeck and Sundstrom, had never competed in a Division I game in their respective careers prior to this season.
Thursday's match will be the seventh all-time meeting between CSUN and Arizona State. The Sun Devils lead the series 4-1-1 and are unbeaten over the last three meetings with the Matadors. The teams played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 2019 in Tempe, Ariz. as Garrity scored the Matadors' goal in the contest. CSUN led 1-0 in that match until the 75th minute when Nicole Douglas hit the equalizer. ASU had won the two previous meetings in 2013 and 2014, both by a 2-0 score. CSUN's only win over the Sun Devils came in 2012 (1-0) at Matador Soccer Field.
Arizona and CSUN have played in one match in women's soccer with that contest taking place in 2008 in Tuscon, Ariz. The Wildcats prevailed in that contest 2-1 in double overtime. The Matadors have not won against a team from the Pac-12 Conference since 2013 when they defeated Oregon State at home.
A Closer Look at Arizona State
ASU improved to 4-0 this season after road victories at Mississippi State (1-0) and UAB (5-1) last week. The Sun Devils were ranked No. 21 this week's United Soccer Coaches poll. ASU has gone undefeated over its last 10 non-conference games dating back to 2019 (9-0-1) with its only draw coming against CSUN. A season ago, ASU finished 8-5-2 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. Head coach Graham Winkworth is in his fifth season at the helm of the program.
Olivia Nguyen leads the team with four goals to go with nine points while Nicole Douglas has a team-best 10 points along with three goals this season. Eight different Sun Devils have hit the net already in 2021. Birta Gudlaugs has a 0.33 GAA and 10 saves in four appearances in front of the net. Gudlaugs was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday while Lieske Carter earned Defensive Player of the Week.
A Closer Look at Arizona
The Wildcats are 1-1 on the season after a 2-1 win over Northern Arizona last Friday. UA's loss this season came at the hands of Utah Valley, 2-0, on Aug. 20. After advancing to the 2019 NCAA Tournament, Arizona had a solid spring season in 2020-21, posting a 9-5-1 overall record. Becca Moros is in her first season at the helm of the Wildcats.
Kayden Heinrich and Tianna Sidtikun have the two Arizona goals thus far this season. Last spring, Jill Aguilera led the team with nine goals to go with five assists and 23 points. Aguilera was also named All-Pac-12 Second Team this past season. In front of the net, Hope Hisey registered a 0.80 GAA with six individual shutouts last spring. Hisey has seven saves in her two starts along with a 1.50 GAA in 2021.
