Arizona Holds Off CSUN, 3-2
9/5/2021 1:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz.---CSUN Women's Soccer's (1-5-0) comeback came up short on Sunday as the Matadors fell to Arizona 3-2 at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Sydney Gilbert and Christiane Sundstrom notched their first goals of the season while Amanda Delgado recorded a career-high 14 saves in net. The Matadors blanked the Wildcats in the second half but were unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit in the match.
Arizona outshot CSUN 21-10 and held a 17-7 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even for the match at 4-4. CSUN was whistled for nine fouls while Arizona committed eight fouls. The Wildcats' Jill Aguilera and Mariah Dunn received yellow cards.
FIRST HALF
Delgado did her best to keep Arizona off the scoreboard in the early going. Jordan Hall nearly found the bottom center of the net before a Delgado save. Moments later, Aguilera had her shot snuffed by Delgado in the fifth minute. Arizona though struck first in the 12th minute when a play up the field led to a Gianna Christiansen touch pass to Aguilera for a goal from 18 yards straight away. Less than a minute later, Arizona played the ball up the right wing where a cross from Jordan Hall was punched away by Delgado. However, Desiree Foster cleaned up the play with a shot into an open net to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
After Gilbert and Cindy Arteaga missed shots, the tandem would collaborate to score the Matadors' first goal in the 29th minute. Off a turnover, Arteaga led the ball up the field to a streaking Gilbert who brought goalkeeper Hope Hisey out from her post. Gilbert would deliver a shot past the goalkeeper to put the Matadors on the scoreboard. Arizona though responded with its third goal in the 36th minute. On an Arizona drive up the field, Aguilera found herself open and against Delgado before beating the CSUN goalkeeper for her second goal of the period.
SECOND HALF
Following intermission, the Matadors received two saves from Delgado before a Wildcat foul allowed the Matadors good positioning near the Arizona box in the 51st minute. Sundstrom took the free kick and would bend the ball into the left corner of the net to bring CSUN to within 3-2.
Looking for the equalizer, the Matadors had shots at the net down the stretch of the half but could not come away with the tying goal. Kacie Garrity had her shot saved by Hisey while Dayne Wagner had an open look from the left side before Hisey made a two-handed save at the back post. Meanwhile, Delgado and the Matador backline provided stingy defense to thwart the Arizona attacks. Delgado tallied seven saves in the second half including three in the final 10-plus minutes to keep CSUN within a goal. Gilbert had the Matadors' last look at the net in the 89th minute but Hisey once again made a save to preserve the Arizona victory.
GAME NOTES
Delgado's 14 saves were two shy of the CSUN single game record set by Tawni Takagi (1998) and Kim Kuhn (1995). With 152 career saves, Delgado is now sixth all-time in CSUN history in the category.
Gilbert's goal was the third of her career while Sundstrom scored her first as a Matador and second in her career as she netted one goal with Utah State in 2019. With Gilbert and Sundstrom's goals, six different Matadors have hit the back of the net this season. Arteaga picked up her second assist of 2021.
