9/25/2021 9:36:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – After dropping the first two sets, the CSUN Women's Volleyball team battled back to win the third set before UC San Diego held off the Matadors in the fourth to take a 3-1 victory in a Big West match Saturday at The Matadome.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, 20-25, 25-20 as the Matadors (1-11, 0-2 Big West) drop their sixth consecutive 3-1 decision. The win, UC San Diego's first-ever conference victory, improves the Tritons to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Sophomore Taylor Orshoff matched her season-high with a team-high 14 kills, hitting .286 on 35 swings. Orshoff also matched her career-high with four digs to go with a pair of blocks including one solo stuff.
• Senior Nicole Nevarez also reached double figures with 12 kills (.276) while also matching her season-high with 16 digs. The double-double was the first this season and fourth career for Nevarez.
• In addition to a season-high two aces, setter Carisa Barron posted 22 assists and five digs while Madison Klungel added 17 assists, five digs and one ace. Senior libero Makayla Bradford led all players in the match with 21 digs along with a season-high six assists.
• In an evenly played match, the teams were separated by only five kills (UCSD 55-50) and three digs (UCSD 65-62). The Tritons served nine aces to CSUN's seven while the Matadors posted an 8.0-4.0 edge in team blocks. UCSD wound up hitting .262 to CSUN's .218.
• Sabire Karacaova led all hitters in the match with 15 kills (.325) to lead UCSD while Emily McDaniel added 13 kills on .458 hitting.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"Obviously, the match didn't turn out the way we wanted. We had that big lead in set one and let it slip away which I think changed the momentum of the match. We need to learn from this and work hard this week in practice and get ready for a tough road trip to Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo."
FIRST SET
Both teams hit well in the opening set as CSUN would hit a match-high .429 in the frame to .393 for the visitors. Both Nevarez and Nieko Thomas had four kills without an error in the set. Down 13-12, kills from Taylor Hunter, Lexi McLeod and Nevarez forced a Triton timeout at 15-13. The Matadors extended the run to 6-0 after a Hunter block, a Klungel ace and another Hunter kill gave the Matadors an 18-13 lead. CSUN would lead by as many as seven at 20-13 before three straight UCSD points trimmed to lead to 20-16. An Orshoff kill ended the run but an ensuing 6-0 run by the visitors put the Tritons in front 22-21. The Matadors pulled even out of CSUN timeout but UCSD would claim the final three points to pull out the 25-22 win.
SECOND SET
After putting down 16 kills in the opening set, the Matadors were held to 10 kills in the second set while being out-hit .238 to .023. After an Orshoff kill pulled CSUN even at 6-6, the Tritons scored three straight to take a 9-6 lead. An Isabela Dobra ace extended the UCSD lead to four (11-7) before a Triton hitting error pulled the Matadors within three. But UCSD would then engineer an 8-3 run to open up an insurmountable 19-11 lead following a Karacaova kill.
THIRD SET
The Matadors rebounded to hit .250 in the third set and held on late the cut the visitors' lead to two sets to one. With the score knotted at 15-15, a Nevarez kill sparked a 3-1 CSUN run as the Matadors led by two at 18-16. CSUN still led by two at 19-17 when Orshoff connected for a kill forcing a UCSD timeout at 20-17. Two straight UCSD points forced a Matador timeout at 20-19 before a Triton hitting error restored the two-point margin. Two more UCSD hitting errors and a Seyvion Waggoner kill set the Matadors up with multiple set points at 24-19 and after the Tritons saved one on a Matador service error, McLeod's kill sent the Matadors to the 25-20 win.
FOURTH SET
Looking to build on the momentum from set three, the Matadors instead dropped 10 of the first 14 points of set four. Still leading by six at 11-5, UCSD pushed the lead to as many as nine at 17-8 and the Tritons held off a late CSUN run - which pulled the Matadors within four - to close the match 25-20.
UP NEXT
The Matadors head back out on the road for their next two conference matches, beginning with a Friday (Oct. 1) match-up at CSU Bakersfield at 5 p.m.
