NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (4-8, 0-0 Big West) kicks off the Big West Conference home schedule this Saturday at The Matadome against Cal Poly. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. on Spectrum SportsNet with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call. Per CSUN Athletics' updated indoor policy, Matador athletic events are closed to the general public until further notice with spectators limited to families and guests of team members.
In a series that dates back to 1960, Cal Poly leads the all-time series with CSUN, 56-51. Last season, the teams played back-to-back games in San Luis Obispo with each squad picking up a win. Cal Poly took game one, rallying in the second half for a 76-70 victory before CSUN pulled away down the stretch of game two for a 64-51 triumph. TJ Starks led the Matadors with 21 points in the win while Atin Wright added 14 points. The Matadors have won four of the last six overall meetings in the series while they have posted victories in four of the last five games played at The Matadome.
The Matadors lost their second Big West Conference game to COVID-19 protocols this week as CSUN's game with CSU Bakersfield scheduled for Jan. 6 was canceled. Last week, the Matadors' scheduled conference opener at UC Irvine was also canceled due to COVID-19 precautions. Per Big West policies, the canceled games are declared no contests and will not be rescheduled. The Matadors took on UC San Diego on Jan. 1 in La Jolla, however, the game was marked as a non-conference contest due to the Tritons currently undergoing their Division I transition period. With the cancellations, CSUN can play a maximum of 16 countable conference games this season.
CSUN would drop its New Year's Day game at UC San Diego by a 72-64 final. The Matadors got off to a solid start, leading by as many as nine points in the first half before taking a 34-33 lead into halftime. The Tritons though took control in the second half behind hot shooting and balanced scoring. UCSD had four players score in double figures led by Jake Killingsworth's 20 points. The Matadors trimmed a 12-point deficit to five with under two minutes to play but could not close the gap down the stretch.
Wright had a team-leading 16 points against UCSD while Elijah Hardy added 13 points and Brendan Harrick posted 11 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Fidelis Okereke also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.
On the Big West leaderboard, Wright is 10th in the league in points per game (12.7). Wright is also third in the nation in free throw percentage (94.7). Hardy ranks in second place in the Big West in steals per game (1.6) and eighth in assists per game (2.8) to go with his 10.6 scoring average. Harrick is now third in the conference in blocks per game (1.2) while Christian Gray is 13th in rebounds per game (5.7).
