UC Santa Barbara Defeats CSUN 4-0

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—UC Santa Barbara defeated CSUN 4-0 in Big West men's soccer action Saturday night at Harder Stadium.
The Gauchos took a 1-0 lead 3:12 into the first half. Rene Pacheco sent a ball towards the CSUN net which deflected off a Matador defender at a sharp angle and into the bottom right of the CSUN goal. The first solid CSUN chance came in the 30th minute when Marley Edwards' effort from 20 yards out went off target. Enrique Pineda broke through the Gauchos' defense in the 41st. His attempt went above the crossbar. On the ensuing UCSB possession, Finn Ballard McBride dribbled through the CSUN defense and scored from just in front to make it 2-0 in favor of UC Santa Barbara.
UCSB increased the lead to 3-0 in the 54th minute. Dominick Phanco passed to Pacheco who scored by kicking the ball into the top right of the Matador goal. CSUN threatened at 59:58 when Dylan Gonzalez's attempt was saved in the bottom center of the net by Leroy Zeller. A Matadors' corner two minutes resulted in an Oscar Cardenas shot that was blocked. A Jamar Ricketts drive in the 71st resulted in an attempt that went high. Cardenas drew a foul in the 73rd which resulted in a Ricketts' free kick. His blast was saved by Zeller.
Ballard McBride converted off a UCSB corner kick in the 74th minute for a 4-0 score. Salaudeen Ayinla was issued his second yellow in the 79th which resulted in a red, putting the Gauchos a man down for the remainder of the match. An Edson Palos free kick just missed in the top right of the UCSB goal during the 85th minute. Back-to-back shots from Hector Villanueva and Levin Gerhardt were saved by Zeller in the 88th minute.

UC Santa Barbara (7-2-2, 2-0 Big West) outshot CSUN 13-12, 6-4 on goal. UCSB posted six corner kicks while the Matadors had five…Cooper Wenzel made three saves for CSUN; Zeller charted four saves for UC Santa Barbara.
