Ricketts' Late Goal Sends CSUN Past UCSD 1-0
10/19/2022 9:34:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LA JOLLA, Calif.— Jamar Ricketts' goal in the 85th minute proved to be the difference as CSUN defeated UC San Diego 1-0 in Big West men's soccer action Wednesday night at Triton Soccer Stadium.
An evenly played-first half saw each team take three shots. Two UCSD attempts were put on goal and saved by Cooper Wenzel. With most of the action taking place in the midfield, only three corner kicks were taken (two by the Tritons, one by the Matadors).
Jack Rhead broke through in the 53rd minute off a Marley Edwards pass. His shot went off the crossbar which went off a UC San Diego player for a corner kick. The Tritons defended the set piece successfully. Dylan Gonzalez just missed in the 58th. Off a free kick, Gonzalez found the ball in front of the UCSD net, but his effort from the short right side went wide.
The Tritons nearly scored in the 70th minute when Mason Haubrich dribbled inside the CSUN 18 where his right-footed attempt went off the left goal post and bounced out. Euen Clark had his shot blocked three minutes later for UCSD. The ball bounced out in front of the Matador goal where the Tritons were called for offside. Clark threatened on the ensuing UC San Diego possession where Clark went left-to-right with a blast that Wenzel saved.
Oscar Cardenas responded with a header that went high. The teams traded corner kicks in the 79th and 80th minutes but the clubs could not take advantage of the set pieces.
Levin Gerhardt began the play to set up the game-winner. He sent a ball to the right side to Gonzalez. Gonzalez sent a cross into the box where Ricketts headed in the pass for his fourth goal of the season.
With just under two minutes to play, UCSD received a free kick off a Matadors' foul. Asa Gibson sent a left-footed attempt high and wide of the CSUN goal, proving to be the final Tritons' offensive threat of the match.
THE STATS
The Matadors would outshoot the Tritons 12-8, with UCSD holding a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Wenzel made three saves as he recorded his third consecutive shutout, his sixth overall this season. UC San Diego posted five corner kicks as CSUN charted four. UC San Diego is 7-7-2, 3-4 in Big West play.
CSUN's victory gives the Matadors 13 Big West points. Thanks to a Wednesday tie between Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside and a UC Davis loss to UC Santa Barbara, the Matadors are now in second place in the conference. UC Santa Barbara remains in the league lead with 14 points.
Cal State Fullerton is third with 12 points, followed by UC Davis and UC Riverside who are tied for fourth with 11. Three teams; Sacramento State, UC San Diego (ineligible for the postseason), and UC Irvine are tied for sixth in the Big West with nine points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"Tonight, was a big road win! I am proud of the effort against a tough opponent."
