Duchemin Records First Double-Double; Santa Clara Edges CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Despite Michelle Duchemin's first career double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds, Santa Clara edged CSUN 66-62 in women's basketball action Thursday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
THE FIRST HALF
A physical first quarter saw the teams combined for 13 fouls and 19 free throws with the Broncos taking a 22-19 lead. The Matadors held Santa Clara to three field goals in the second quarter (in 17 attempts). CSUN led by as much as seven in the frame before taking a 33-31 advantage into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
Santa Clara made eight of 14 field goal attempts in the third quarter, outscoring the Matadors 19-12 to take a 50-45 lead after 30 minutes. CSUN battled back, tying the game on an Anaiyah Tu'ua three-pointer 58 seconds into the period. Broncos' guard Tess Heal scored eight of the next nine SCU points and went on a 9-3 run to lead by six.
A pair of Duchemin free throws with 3:21 to go cut the lead to 59-55. Both teams went cold over the next three minutes as no points were put up until two Ayzhiana Basallo free throws went in at the 45-second mark. Jordyn Jackson responded with a pair of free throws on the ensuing Matadors' possession.
CSUN fouled, sending Ashlee Maldonado to the charity stripe where she went 1-of-2. Duchemin drove the lane the next time down, scoring on a layup for a 62-59 score. The Matadors fouled Basallo who made two free throws with 28 seconds remaining. Macy Smith drove the lane and connected on a layup to make it 64-61 with four seconds remaining. Basallo sank two free throws with one second remaining for the final 66-62 score.
THE STATS
Duchemin's 23 points were a game-high. She reset her career high in the first half when she scored 13 points. Duchemin was 8-of-15 from the field, and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Duchemin was 4-of-6 from the free throw line. She added two assists. Jackson was 7-of-8 from the free throw line on her way to 13 points.
Heal was 7-of-11 from the floor as she scored a team-high 19 points before fouling out last in the fourth quarter. Lara Edmanson charted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The teams were whistled for 48 fouls (26 for CSUN, 22 for SCU), 14 of which were offensive. Five players fouled out (three for SCU, and two for CSUN). Santa Clara was 20-of-53 from the floor (37.7%) as CSUN made 19-of-54 field goal attempts (35.2%). The Matadors outrebounded the Broncos 42-29, 19-12 on the offensive glass. CSUN committed 26 turnovers which resulted in 21 SCU points. The Matadors forced 19 turnovers, resulting in 13 points.

"What jumps out immediately when you look at the final stats are the turnovers. It is hard to win any game when you commit 26 turnovers. We knew this was going to happen this year for Michelle. She has stepped up her game both on the physical side and the mental side of the game. It was a lot of fun today to watch her grow."

Santa Clara improved to 2-2, playing their third opponent from the Big West in four tries…Thursday was the 13th time that CSUN and Santa Clara are playing women's basketball with the Broncos now leading the all-time series 10-3…Jackson surpassed the 800-point plateau and now has 805 for her career and has a chance to become the 14th Matador women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in a CSUN career this season.
