Amundsen & Jackson Combine For 33; CSUN Battles in Loss to USD

SAN DIEGO—Jordyn Jackson and Tess Amundsen combined for 33 points for CSUN but the University of San Diego defeated CSUN 73-57 in women's basketball action Tuesday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
FIRST HALF
A slow start on the part of both teams saw the Toreros lead the Matadors 6-4 at the first quarter media timeout. However, USD scored five in a row out of the timeout to go up by seven. San Diego would outscore CSUN over the final 4+ minutes of the frame to take a 16-9 lead. Macy Smith scored the final five points of the quarter for the Matadors.
CSUN opened the second by making three of its first field goal attempts. The Toreros matched the Matadors and began the second quarter by making five of its first six field goal attempts. Jess Finney made her three-point field goals to push USD to a 29-15 lead. The Toreros scored the only four points in the final five minutes of the half for either team, as San Diego led 33-17 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Jackson scored six of the third eight CSUN points of the second half to cut the USD lead to 14, 39-25, midway through the third quarter. Jackson would end the third with 10 points as CSUN battled USD for the remainder of the period. A Finney three-pointer at the buzzer put the Toreros up 55-35 after 30 minutes.
Smith capped off a 7-0 run to begin the fourth quarter for the Matadors with a three-pointer that cut the San Diego advantage to 13 and forced USD to call timeout with just under eight to play. Amundsen's fast-break three-pointer with just over six to go made it a 10-2 spurt, cutting the lead to 57-42. Finney matched the three-pointer on the ensuing USD possession to return the lead to 15.
An Amundsen three-pointer at the 3:32 mark created a 63-50 score. CSUN called timeout. Ayanna Khalfani's layup again made it a 15-point game. The teams traded turnovers before Amundsen sank a long jumper at 2:54 to make it 65-52. An Anaiyah Tu'ua three-point play matched Kiera Oakry's four-point play on the next USD possession. USD would make six of eight free throws down the stretch on their way to the victory.
THE STATS
Amundsen scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the second half. Jackson went 8-of-13 from the floor for 16 points as she added five assists and three rebounds. Smith scored 10. Finney led all scorers for USD with a game-high 17 points. Laura Erikstrup posted 16 points and five rebounds for the Toreros.
CSUN shot a season-high 51.1% (23-of-45) in the game and were 16-of-27 in the second half (59.2%). San Diego was 29-of-59 from the field (49.2%). CSUN committed 24 turnovers which were turned into 19 USD points. The Matadors made eight steals as USD turned the ball over 15 times. USD outrebounded CSUN 30-27, 12-6 on the offensive glass.

"I am proud of our team as we continue to battle. Our record makes it very easy to give in after the first half tonight. But I like the effort and fight we showed. Now we have to put together 40 minutes. Jordyn and Tess did a great job tonight in knocking down shots in our best shooting effort of the season."
