Matadors Fall To UC Davis in Big West Tennis Opener

DAVIS, Calif.—UC Davis defeated CSUN 4-0 in the Matadors' Big West Women's Tennis opener Friday afternoon at the Mayra Welch Tennis Center.
Doubles began with Yana Gurevich and Arianna Stavropoulos defeating Magdalena Hedrzak and Sasha Turchak 6-1. The Aggies (6-4, 3-3 Big West) would clinch the doubles point when Sara Tsukamoto and Lauren Ko defeated Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso 6-1. Victoria Santibañez Luna and Jenna Dorian would get CSUN a win with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles against Olive Maunupau and Carly Schwartzberg.
Three singles matches were completed. Tsukamoto handed Coetzee a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at No. 1 singles. Stavropoulos won in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at No. 3 versus Fraile Toboso. Gurevich defeated Hedrzak 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to clinch the overall victory for UC Davis.
In the three unfinished matches, Turchak was leading 1-0 at No. 4 singles as she won 15-13 in a first-set tiebreak against Olive Maunupau. Kristina Evloeva was leading Santibañez Luna 6-4, 4-0 at No. 5 singles. Michelle Zell and Jenna Dorian were in a tight 6-2, 3-4 contest at No. 6 singles.

UP NEXT
CSUN (3-1, 0-1 Big West) hosts UC San Diego (2-7, 1-3 Big West) on Mar. 5 at noon. The Matadors will then welcome Fresno State (7-1) to the Matador Tennis Complex on Mar. 6 at 11 a.m.
