CSUN Sweeps UC San Diego to Earn First Big West Win
3/5/2022 3:38:00 PM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN swept UC San Diego 4-0 in Big West Conference Women's Tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex.
Magdalena Hedrzak and Sasha Turchak earned the first win of the day for the Matadors as the No. 2 doubles duo defeated Anu Bhadada and Anna Snissarenko 6-2. Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso clinched the doubles point when the CSUN pair earned a 6-2 decision against Ella Pachl and Katelyn Vu at No. 1. Rachel Wagner and Adriana Tabares handed Victoria Santibañez Luna and Jenna Dorian a 6-3 defeat at No. 3 doubles.
Turchak defeated Bhadada 6-3, 6-1 to begin singles play in the No. 5 match.
"It was difficult as it kept changing from being sunny, to still, and then to a lot of wind and a little bit of drizzle, so we had to keep adjusting to the climate," Turchak said. "We are used to practicing with the wind around this time of day, so that gave us an advantage as they were struggling with (the wind) more."
Ekaterina Repina defeated Pachl, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Santibañez Luna clinched the dual for the Matadors when she defeated Shweta Kumar 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
"The weather was kind of hard to play (in)," said Santibañez Luna. "It is nice that we can practice with the wind (during the week) as it is to our advantage at this point. Everyone stayed strong and consistent and tried not to do too much in these conditions. I am happy with the job that we did today."
Before CSUN clinched the win, Coetzee was up 6-3, 5-3 at No. 2 singles against Tabares. Hedzrzak was up a set at No. 3 singles versus Vu. Fraile Toboso was tied 1-1 and up 2-0 in the third set at No. 4 against Wagner. UC San Diego drops to 2-9 overall, 1-5 in Big West play.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GARY VICTOR
"It has been an extremely turbulent week. We learned last night that Yuliia (Zhytelna)'s parents have had to evacuate their home in the Ukraine. We also found out that Magdalena's grandmother has offered to take them in (Poland), which has been one of the most touching things I have ever heard in my life. It is so much bigger than tennis. We are fighting through tears out there for Yuliia and the Ukrainian people. "I am so proud of this team for competing. I'm happy for Vika (Victoria) to get a clinch. She works so hard and is a great teammate."
