CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—CSUN dropped a pair of games to Pac-12 foes on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
GAME 1
Utah defeated CSUN 5-1 in the opener.
Julia Jimenez's RBI single in the bottom of the first earned the Utes an early lead. With one out in the top of the third, Jaymi Steward singled. She stole her team-leading eighth base of the year (in eight tries) before scoring on a Utah error to tie the score.
The Utes scored three times in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. With the bases loaded, Destiny Whit was hit by a Kenedee Jamerson pitch to drive in Jimenez. Sophie Jacquez's two-RBI single capped off the rally for Utah. Halle Morris' double in the bottom of the fifth drove in Shelbi Ortiz for the final run of the game.
Utah pitcher Mariah Lopez tossed a complete-game three-hitter. Lopez struck out seven and issued two walks. In addition to Steward, Kaylee Escutia, and Sydney Freijanes picked up base hits for the Matadors. Aliya Belarde and Ellessa Bonstrom both recorded two hits for the Utes.
GAME 2
Oregon State's Mariah Mazon no-hit CSUN in the nightcap as Oregon State defeated CSUN 6-0.
Mazon struck out 13 without walking a batter. She faced two above the minimum as the Beavers committed an error in the top of the second which resulted in the Matadors stranding a runner at third. The second runner reached in the third when Alexis Lemus reached first on a wild pitch after striking out. Mazon retired the final 13 batters she faced.
At the plate, Mazon went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. The top four hitters in the OSU lineup combined for eight of the 10 Oregon State hits.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Today was a tough day. We didn't compete throughout the entire day. As a team, we have to evaluate ourselves and make the adjustments we need. This weekend helped us prepare for the season and told the team we must look at it that way. We have to be better and sustain our energy throughout a weekend and never stop competing."
UP NEXT
CSUN (7-8) travels to the Amy Harrison Classic Mar. 4-6 at California Baptist. The action begins on Friday against North Dakota State at 1 p.m. before the Matadors face the host Lancers at 3:30 p.m.
