RIVERSIDE, Calif.—CSUN pitchers Kenedee Jamerson and Alexis Martinez combined to give up five hits, as the Matadors split a pair of softball games on day one of the Amy S. Harrison Classic at California Baptist Friday afternoon.
GAME 1
North Dakota State defeated CSUN 2-1 in Friday's first game. The Bison took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Dez Cardenas and Cameryn Maykut both drove in runs.
Taking advantage of a two-out NDSU error, Kennedi Sorensen doubled in Jaymi Steward in the bottom of the third to get the Matadors on the board. Alexis Lemus was hit by a Paige Vargas pitch. With runners on first and second, Kaylee Escutia singled to load the bases. Vargas got out of the jam by striking out Aaliyah Swan.
Sami Garcia walked to lead off the CSUN fifth. Mia Cortez entered as a pinch-runner but was thrown out attempting to steal by Bison catcher Avery Wysong. Vargas retired the next two Matadors to keep the score 2-1.
Lemus was hit by Vargas for the second time to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Mia Stankiewicz pinch-ran for Lemus. Wysong threw out Stankiewicz attempting to steal. Vargas again retired the next two Matadors to quiet the CSUN threat.
North Dakota State (11-4) put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh. Jamerson induced an Emilee Buringa fly ball out to end the inning.
Pinch-hitter Samantha Kwiatkowski reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the seventh. A second pinch-hitter, Alexis Garcia, grounded out to third, allowing Kwiatkowski to advance to second. Vargas struck out Mikayla Carman on a 2-2 count. Sami Garcia walked to bring up Steward. Vargas battled back from being down 3-0 in the count to Steward to record her ninth strikeout of the game to give North Dakota State the victory.
Vargas allowed four hits, two of which were recorded by Sorensen. She walked two. Jamerson, a fifth-year grad student, reset her career-high with seven strikeouts. Jamerson allowed three hits and walked two.
GAME 2
Martinez tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Matadors defeated California Baptist (10-8) 2-0 in the nightcap.
Steward reached on an error to begin the CSUN third and would score on a Sorensen double. Cortez pinch-ran for Sorensen, advancing to second on a Lemus sacrifice bunt before Escutia worked out a walk. The Lancers' catcher, Mackenzie San Pedro committed a throwing error that allowed Cortez to score to give the Matadors a 2-0 lead.
After giving up a hit in the bottom of the first (which was followed by a double play to end the inning), Martinez retired nine in a row before walking Makyla Jordan with two outs in the fourth. Martinez needed two pitches to get Amanda Argomaniz to ground out to first to wrap up the frame.
Martinez retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Sydney Soto singled through the left side. Argomaniz grounded into a 4-3 double play to end the game.
Facing only one above the minimum, Martinez needed only 74 pitches to record her second shutout of the season. Martinez struck out two and issued the one walk. Sorensen and Swan combined for the four CSUN hits (two each).
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"I felt we made some mental mistakes that hurt us (in game one), but I am proud of the team coming out in game two and taking a big win. Alexis threw a great game and we played great defense."
