Matadors Travel to Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN (7-8) softball team heads to the Amy S. Harrison Classic this week. The Matadors will play all their games at California Baptist in Riverside.

The tournament begins on Friday at 1 p.m. when the Matadors face North Dakota State. Friday's play concludes against the host Lancers at 3:30 p.m.

North Dakota State is 10-4 after posting a 3-2 record at the New Mexico Lobo Classic last weekend. Nicole Licea is batting a team-high .429 while Molly Gates has recorded a NDSU-best 15 RBI. Reanne Rudd has charted a team-best three home runs in only eight appearances.

The Bison feature three players from California including Paige Vargas, the No. 1 pitcher for NDSU, who hails from Mission Viejo. She is 5-1 with six complete games in seven starts. She has struck out 51 in 42.2 innings. CSUN and North Dakota State are playing for the first time since 2018. The Bison have won the previous two meetings between the two clubs.

The Matadors and the Lancers play for the second and third time in three weeks after California Baptist defeated CSUN 4-2 during the Campbell/Cartier Classic Feb. 19 to take a 2-1 all-time series lead.

The Lancers were 3-2 at the Amy Nutter Collegiate Classic last week. CBU is now 8-7 on the year and will host the University of San Diego on Wednesday before hosting the Matadors this weekend. Maile Olsen is batting at CBU-high .320. Amanda Argomaniz is hitting .300 with one home run and is tied for the team lead in RBI (10) with Makayla Jordan.

On Saturday, CSUN faces Oregon State for the second consecutive week beginning at 10 a.m. before wrapping up the action at 3 p.m. against Sacred Heart. The Beavers defeated the Matadors 6-0 last Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Mariah Mazon no-hit CSUN, striking out 13 and going 3-4 with a home run and 5 RBI.

Frankie Hammoude is 19th in Division I this week in batting with a .500 average. Her seven home runs are the third most in D-1 this week. She has driven in 16 runs 15 starts in 2022. Mazon is now 5-3 with 72 strikeouts and a 1.22 ERA. She is hitting .396 at the plate. This will be the 34th time that CSUN and Oregon State are playing with the Matadors leading the all-time series 20-13-1.

Located in Fairfield, Conn., Sacred Heart is 2-4. The Pioneers went 2-3 to open the season at the Charleston Southern Tournament before losing 4-1 to local rival Quinnipiac Feb. 23. Sacred Heart was off last weekend. The Pioneers' leading hitter is Amy Petrovich (.400). Emily Carroll (4) has the most RBI on the squad. Sarah Lawton is 2-1 in the circle. She has posted a 2.21 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 19 innings.

Kaylee Escutia tallied a strong weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Feb. 24-26 as the Matadors went 2-3. Escutia hit .462 with one home run and two RBI. In five games, she had a .692 on-base percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Sydney Freijanes batted .364 with three RBI in five starts. Jaymi Steward hit .333. She hit her 15th career home run and drove in four runs. Kenedee Jamerson went 1-2 in the circle while Alexis Martinez was 1-1. Allie Gardiner picked up her second save of the year during the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
