Matadors Head to McNeese for Weekend Series

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.--CSUN Baseball (7-5) continues its road trip with a weekend series at McNeese State starting Friday. Due to expected inclement weather, the series opener will start at 12 p.m. (PST). First pitch for Saturday and Sunday's games are set for 12 p.m. and 9 a.m., respectively. Live stats will be provided for all three games.

The Matadors are making their first trip to Lake Charles, La. in team history. CSUN has played McNeese only once in team history with the Matadors coming out on top 4-3 in 11 innings in a game that took place in Edinburg, Texas on Feb. 9, 2007.
CSUN is coming off a two-game series split at Grand Canyon earlier this week. In the opener on Tuesday, the Matadors took a one-run lead in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Jakob Simons but GCU picked up a pinch-hit two-run homer from Adrian Torres in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2. CSUN would bounce back on Wednesday, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie for an eventual 9-4 victory.
Graysen Tarlow registered five hits in six at-bats in the GCU series including a 3-for-3 effort off the bench in game two. Gabe Gonzalez chipped in with a 3-for-7 effort at the plate in the two games while Kai Moody finished 3-for-9 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sebastian Granados gave the Matadors 3.2 innings of work with one run allowed in his first career start in game two. Elias Jauregui earned the win on Wednesday by working 1.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Heading into the weekend, Moody is tied for the Big West lead in runs scored (13) and home runs (4) in the early going while he is second in RBI (14) and slugging percentage (.708) and fifth in hits (15) to go with a team-high .313 batting average. Gonzalez comes into the McNeese series second on the team in batting (.297), home runs (3) and RBI (10). Newcomers to the team this season, Andrew Sojka is hitting .282 with nine RBI while Joey Kramer is batting .262 with two homers and nine RBI.Â
Blake Sodersten earns the Friday start against McNeese as he sports a 2-1 record and 3.12 ERA with 12 strikeouts. Ryan Wentz, who starts Saturday, is coming off a career-high six inning-performance where he struck out six at Stanford last week. Wentz has a 1.76 ERA and 12 strikeouts in three starts on the year.
A Closer Look at McNeese
The Cowboys have gone 8-5 this season including 7-4 at Joe Miller Ballpark. McNeese fell to No. 6 LSU on Wednesday by a 6-3 score. The team notched a top-25 win on Sunday with a 5-2 triumph over 25th-ranked Louisiana Tech. McNeese finished last season with a 32-30 record and 21-18 mark in the Southland Conference. The Cowboys would win their second-straight Southland Conference Tournament title last season, doing so as the No. 7 seed before playing in the NCAA Regionals. Head coach Justin Hill is in his ninth season leading the program.
'Tre Obregon III is hitting a team-high .362 with two homers, 11 RBI and nine runs scored. Brad Burckel has scored a team-best 15 runs while hitting .340 with 10 RBI. Also hitting above the .300 mark, Payton Harden is batting .320 with four doubles and 10 RBI. Right-hander Chance Stone earns the start in the opener as he comes in with a 2.89 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 9.1 innings. Grant Rogers has a team-high 23 strikeouts in 16 innings to go with a 4.50 ERA.
