Matadors Drop 10-7 Decision to UCSB

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo fell to No. 16 UC Santa Barbara 10-7 in a Big West Conference match on Friday at Matador Pool. Dorottya Telek and Tatiana Smeltzer scored two goals apiece while Meghan Lopez racked up 12 saves in a full 32 minutes in front of the cage. The Matadors trailed by a goal with six minutes to play but could not complete a late comeback against the Gauchos.
Juju Amaral opened up the scoring at the six-minute mark of the first period before Kylee Jansen evened the score at 1-1 two minutes later. The last four minutes though belonged to the Gauchos as two costly penalties charged to CSUN resulted in back-to-back UCSB goals. Caitlyn Snyder added to the lead with a tally at the 2:02 mark, making it a 4-1 game.
The Gauchos maintained a three-goal lead near the two-minute mark of the second period until CSUN made a late charge to end the half. Anna Pal found the back of the net with 2:22 remaining then Smeltzer scored a goal of her own a minute later. UCSB was charged with an exclusion in the final seconds of the half and CSUN would take advantage with a tying goal from Smeltzer before the buzzer sounded.
In the third, UCSB reclaimed the lead behind goals from Snyder and Amaral before Valeria Martinez cut the lead to one with a tally at the 5:17 mark. However, a third penalty exclusion would be called on CSUN in the third, resulting in another goal from Amaral, extending the lead to 8-6.
Telek would cut the UCSB lead to one with her second goal of the game with 6:15 left to play in the fourth period. UCSB though held CSUN scoreless the rest of the way while the Gauchos added a pair of insurance goals from Nina Munson and Sarah Owens to secure a win.

GAME NOTES
Telek added two assists and three earned exclusions to her stat line in the match while Pal also had two assists and two steals.
For UCSB, Amaral and Snyder had three goals apiece.

"Playing a Big West game in front of our home crowd was a great atmosphere. We battled hard today and came up short, but we showed great improvement from our game against the Gauchos last month. Proud of the team's effort, we'll get back to work and continue perfecting the little things."
