LAKE CHARLES, La.---McNeese State hit solo home runs in the ninth and 10th innings to defeat CSUN 4-3 on Saturday at Joe Miller Ballpark. Bart West finished 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. Ryan Wentz received a no-decision after tossing 6.2 innings. allowing two runs on eight hits.
The Matadors (8-6) managed a hit through the first two innings but broke through in the third inning to go in front. West singled to start the inning then stole second base before Sebastian Garcia roped an RBI double to plate the game's first run. The next two CSUN batters were retired by Andrew Sheridan before Ali Camarillo stroked an RBI single, giving the Matadors an early 2-0 lead.
CSUN starter Ryan Wentz would have to work out of jams multiple times on Saturday. McNeese had runners at the corners in the first inning before Wentz retired the next three batters in a row. He also pitched around a pair of two-out walks in the second then he would strand two more in scoring position in the third inning when he forced Peyton Harden to lineout and Braden Duhon to groundout.
The Cowboys though cut the Matadors' lead in half in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI double from Andruw Gonzales. Wentz would battle back after the double to retire the next six McNeese batters.
The Matadors added to their lead in the top half of the fifth inning as West again set the table for the frame with a leadoff hit. West later advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch with two outs.
Wentz still held a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth when the Cowboys put together a two-out rally to again trim the lead to one. Pinch runner Conner Westenburg stole second base to get into scoring position, allowing Antonio Gauthier an opportunity to pick up an RBI single. Gauthier later stole second base but Wentz retired Reid Bourque on a flyout for the third out.
McNeese threatened again in the seventh inning after Wentz retired the first two batters. The Cowboys would load the bases, leading to head coach Dave Serrano making a change on the mound. Lucas Braun came out of the bullpen and forced Kade Morris to groundout to end the inning.
After Braun faced the minimum in the eighth, Blake Schriever entered the fray in the ninth looking for the save. The Cowboys though had different ideas as Brad Burckel hit a one-out game tying home run. McNeese eventually put two runners on base in the ninth inning but Schriever escaped further trouble by striking out Cooper Hext.
Schriever remained on the mound in the 10th inning and would record the first out before McNeese picked up the key hit of the afternoon. Gauthier stroked a 2-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a walk-off home run, sending McNeese to victory.
GAME NOTES
Wentz's 6.2 innings of work represented the deepest the sophomore has pitched in his career. Braun worked 1.1 innings, allowing a hit to go with a strikeout.
Garcia had the lone Matador extra base hit in the game. Andrew Sojka and Mason Le also had singles on Saturday.
For McNeese, Cameron Foster pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits, to pick up the victory.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today was a tough one all the way around. Colder than normal conditions here and very windy, which made the playing conditions tough on both teams. I thought early on we did some good things as a team. Offensively, we were taking some good at-bats to scratch across some runs and Ryan Wentz had another good start for us. But in the end, it wasn't enough and I felt we allowed them to stick around to be a swing away from tying it up, as they eventually did, to go on for the victory.
I'm pretty happy with this team in many areas but it's imperative that we find ways to hold and win these one-run games. That's what the good teams do and I believe we are a good team. Best part of baseball is tomorrow is a new day and I expect our team to respond the right way as we have all season."
