Matadors Top McNeese 6-4 for Series Win
3/13/2022 1:52:00 PM | Baseball
Â
Gabe Gonzalez has two hits including a solo home run while Kai Moody and Mason Le had two hits and an RBI as well. Traxel scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs to go with four strikeouts.
Â
The Matadors jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning when Gonzalez belted a solo home run, but the Cowboys would answer with a run of their own in the home half of the frame when Kade Hunter hit a one-out RBI double. Catcher Graysen Tarlow helped limit the damage in the inning by throwing out Hunter trying to steal third.
Â
The Matadors would retake the lead in the fourth inning behind Moody. Moody led off the fourth with a single before advancing all the way to third base on an error in center field. He later scored on an Andrew Sojka groundout.
Â
In the sixth, the Matadors broke through with a three-run frame to push the lead to 5-1. Joey Kramer drove in Sojka on an RBI single then a sacrifice bunt from Bart West set the table for Le to pick up an infield RBI single. Jakob Simons capped off the scoring spree with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Traxel would have to battle throughout the afternoon including in the third inning when he allowed a pair of singles. He helped his own cause though by throwing out Julian Gonzales attempting to take third base.
Â
Traxel would strand two base runners in the fourth, one in the sixth and two more Cowboys in the seventh inning. In the home half of the seventh, Traxel walked two and gave up a single but induced a timely 5-4-3 double play.
Â
Moody extended the CSUN lead to 6-1 in the eighth by drawing a bases loaded walk before Traxel returned to the mound in the bottom of the eighth. McNeese would collect two hits to start the frame, one of which being an RBI double from Peyton Johnson that knocked Traxel out of the game. Xavier Martinez entered the fray and would retire two of the next three batters, but a passed ball and Reid Bourque RBI hit cut the lead to 6-4.
Sebastian Granados was summoned from the bullpen with two outs in the eighth inning before McNeese loaded the bases on a Gonzales walk. With the lead in jeopardy, Granados picked up perhaps the most pivotal out of the game by retiring Brad Burckel on a flyout.Â
Granados returned to the mound in the ninth and gave up a leadoff hit, but rebounded to retire the next three batters to earn the save.

GAME NOTES
The quartet of Moody, Gonzalez, Le and Simons reached base three times each in the win. Gonzalez, who missed the last two games, extended his on-base streak to 11-straight games while Camarillo has reached in 10 consecutive games. Moody posted his team-best sixth multiple-hit game.
West had a team-high five hits and batted .455 in the McNeese series while Camarillo went 4-for-10 with three RBI. All three Matador starters pitched into the seventh inning in the series.

ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I'm happy that we got to scratch out this last win of the series and win this road series. I will say, nothing about this weekend was easy. It was great to have Gabe Gonzalez back in the lineup. He sparked us early with a solo home run to set the tone. It was also great to see some production from Kai Moody who had struggled in the first two games.
From the mound, we got what we usually do out of Blaine Traxel. He seems to always gives us a chance to win and he did that today. I felt today was more about his heart and grit. It was also great to see the two freshmen, Xavier Martinez and Sebastian Granados, get the last six outs. Martinez's line might not look as great, but he threw the ball extremely well and was a victim of a sunball misplayed in the outfield. Granados showed some maturity coming in with a tight situation and slamming the door.
Â
As a coach, I'm never satisfied, but after finishing 4-4 on this trip, one that started in Stanford then onto GCU and all the way out to McNeese State, I can say our guys handled themselves well. I believe all three of those teams have a chance to win their respective conferences and be in the postseason."
